Leslie Sisman: Popcorn Preview: Lincoln

Film: Lincoln (2012)
Cast includes: Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood), Sally Field (Mrs. Doubtfire), David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises), James Spader (Boston Legal), Hal Holbrook (Men of Honor), Tommy Lee Jones (Men in Black), John Hawkes (The Sessions)
Director: Steven Spielberg (Saving Private Ryan)
Screenwriter: Tony Kushner (Munich)
Genre: Drama | History (149 minutes)
Based on Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin

The bloody Civil War has tested the nation's endurance, but the tide is finally turning. Although the secession of the Southern states may have started the war, President Lincoln now sees that it will not truly be over unless slavery is abolished. Since a constitutional amendment would require a two-thirds majority vote, getting it passed will mean nothing short of all-out war in Congress. There's a core of support, but many in Lincoln's own party are lukewarm, and they still need to win votes from some Democrats. The rhetoric is strong on all sides, "Congress must never declare equal those whom God has made unequal!" Having failed a year earlier to abolish slavery, many think it's foolish to invest more political capital in trying again. "Time is a great thickener of things," says Lincoln. What the country really wants is peace. But Lincoln is determined, "Blood's been spilt to afford us this moment. Now. Now. Now."

Based on a portion of Team of Rivals, by presidential historian Doris Kerns Goodwin, the movie is a well-documented telling of the passage of the 13th Amendment. It wasn't pretty! There was arm-twisting, bargaining, cajoling and issues of questionable morality as the president attempted to get Congress to do the right thing. One of the most significant aspects of this movie is that it portrays Lincoln as those around him saw him, before he became the Lincoln of legend. While he was a gifted speechwriter, he wasn't a gifted speechmaker. His voice was thin and reedy. His stories and jokes often seemed out of place in the nation's capitol. We tend to forget he was, above all, an accomplished politician, leaving no stone unturned for a vote. We prefer to think of our heroes as being above all that.

Spielberg decided to sacrifice entertainment value for historical accuracy. Getting the votes to abolish slavery was tedious business, and the movie shows us that. There's very little action, and a lot of talking -- much of which will seem unfamiliar. The Tony Kushner-written screenplay relies heavily on the common word usage of the day. Daniel Day-Lewis spent a year studying Lincoln in order to give us an accurate portrayal. And he truly is amazing, after we get used to the stooped walk and the unimpressive voice. It's a film that's hard to fully absorb in a single viewing. There are many important individuals that are hard to keep straight at first. But that said, it's an important film about an important turning point in U.S. history. What it lacks in action and romance, it makes up for in historical significance. In hindsight, emancipation seems like a no-brainer, but it certainly didn't seem that way in 1865. "What will follow? Getting the vote for women?"

An accurate portrayal of Lincoln as the politician who won passage of the 13th Amendment.

Neew live vaccine approach for SARS and novel coronaviruses

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Rapid mutation has long been considered a key to viral adaptation to environmental change. But in the case of the coronavirus responsible for deadly severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), collaborating researchers at the University of North Carolina and Vanderbilt University have found that accelerating the rate of mutations cripples the virus's ability to cause disease in animals. In addition, they say this finding may allow scientists to explore a new option for creating safer live vaccines.

A collaborative study, published Nov. 11 in Nature Medicine, demonstrates a SARS-coronavirus, altered to lack the ability to "proofread" (correct mistakes in replication), begins to mutate much more rapidly and becomes unable to cause disease in mouse models. In effect, the alteration creates a profoundly weakened or attenuated SARS virus.

This work may offer reassurance at a critical time. Public attention was recently heightened regarding a novel human coronavirus that sickened at least two with respiratory and kidney disease, killing one in the Middle East. The SARS outbreak in 2002 and 2003 caused 50 percent mortality in older adults. A rapid and effective international response ended the outbreak in just four months. The final tally: 8,422 cases of SARS, resulting in 916 deaths.

"We originally thought that the virus might find a way to fix the mutations we engineered or work around them as viruses often do. That didn't happen, and in this case, the attenuated viruses replicated well enough and long enough to generate a protective immune response, even in immunocompromised animals, so it works wonderfully as a vaccine in an animal model," said Rachel Graham, Ph.D., a research associate at UNC, who led the research.

The study is the culmination of more than a decade of collaboration between the laboratories of Mark Denison, M.D., Craig-Weaver Professor of Pediatrics and professor of Pathology, Microbiology & Immunology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and Ralph Baric, Ph.D., professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Gillings School of Global Public Health. The researchers' aim is to better understand how coronaviruses, which also cause the common cold, evolve and spread between species.

Denison's lab developed the attenuated SARS virus by disabling a unique exoribonuclease (or ExoN) protein, referred to as a proofreading protein. Previous Vanderbilt studies had shown that disabling ExoN knocks out the virus's ability to correct mistakes, increases mutations twentyfold, and stops its ability to cause disease, at least in the lab setting. Graham, formerly a graduate student in Denison's lab, was able to continue the work in animal models as a postdoctoral scientist in Baric's lab.

Coronaviruses are RNA viruses known to have the largest genomes in the RNA viral world. It is now understood that the ExoN proofreading protein allows coronaviruses to maintain their expanded genomes, with many proteins evolved to help them survive and spread. But deactivation of ExoN creates a particularly enticing potential approach to vaccine design.

"Live vaccines in general confer broader and longer-lasting immunity, but the risk of live vaccines is they could potentially revert back to virulence as happened with the live polio vaccine in immunocompromised people," Baric said. "Our evidence is exciting because a more permanently attenuated virus might be safer. We believe that related approaches can be applied to other important human and animal viruses, resulting in safer vaccines."

To test the likelihood of reversion to virulence, researchers allow a virus to grow in a host that lacks immunity. In the current study, even in very young, very old and immunocompromised animals, the virus did not kill and could persist for a long time without showing signs of a return to virulence.

"In contrast to science fiction, where mutations are evil and endanger the world, our studies demonstrate that viruses have evolved to tightly control their mutation rates, and changing that rate is detrimental to virus survival and disease in nature," Denison said. "Since all coronaviruses have the ExoN protein, this method for attenuation could be broadly applicable in coronaviruses."

"If we can't have a vaccine ready to administer that works for all coronaviruses, then we at least have a strategy for fast production of a functional vaccine for any new epidemic coronavirus that might arise. That's a key take-away point of our paper and what makes it so important in the face of current events," Graham said.

Lawmakers probe widening generals scandal

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Lawmakers are digging into the tangled tale of emails that exposed an extramarital affair ending David Petraeus' CIA career and led investigators to a questionable relationship between a Florida socialite and the general commanding the war in Afghanistan.

Their main question: Was national security threatened?

The extramarital affair was between Petraeus and his biographer Paula Broadwell, who U.S. officials say sent harassing, anonymous emails to a woman she apparently saw as a rival for Petraeus' affections. That woman, Jill Kelley, in turn traded sometimes flirtatious messages with Gen. John Allen, possible evidence of another inappropriate relationship.

The CIA's acting director, Michael Morell, started answering lawmakers' questions Tuesday on Capitol Hill, meeting with top Senate intelligence officials to explain the CIA's take on events that led to Petraeus' resignation last week after he acknowledged the affair. The lawmakers are especially concerned over reports that Broadwell had classified information on her laptop, though FBI investigators say they concluded there was no security breach.

President Barack Obama is expected to make his first comments on the widening scandal Wednesday, during a postelection news conference at the White House.

Obama had hoped to use the afternoon news conference, his first since his re-election, to build support for his economic proposals heading into negotiations with lawmakers on the so-called fiscal cliff. But the scandal could overshadow his economic agenda this week, derail plans for a smooth transition in his national security team and complicate war planning during a critical time in the Afghanistan war effort.

Allen has been allowed to stay in his job as commander of the Afghan war and provide a leading voice in White House discussions on how many troops will remain in Afghanistan ? and for what purposes ? after the U.S.-led combat operation ends in 2014. The White House said the investigation would not delay Allen's recommendation to Obama on the next phase of the U.S. troop drawdown from Afghanistan, nor would it delay the president's decision on the matter. Allen's recommendation is expected before the end of the year.

But Obama did put on hold Allen's nomination to become the next commander of U.S. European Command as well as the NATO supreme allied commander in Europe, at the request of Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, until Pentagon investigators are able to sift through the 20,000-plus pages of documents and emails that involve Allen and Kelley.

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Wednesday that he had "full confidence" in Allen and looked forward to working with him if he is ultimately confirmed.

The FBI decided to turn over the Allen information to the military once the bureau recognized it contained no evidence of a federal crime, according to a federal law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the matter on the record and demanded anonymity. Adultery, however, is a crime under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Allen, 58, worked to save his imperiled career. He told Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, that he is innocent of misconduct, according to Col. David Lapan, Dempsey's spokesman.

At a news conference Wednesday in Perth, Australia, Panetta said, "No one should leap to any conclusions," and said he is fully confident in Allen's ability to continue to lead in Afghanistan. He added that putting a hold on Allen's European Command nomination was the "prudent" thing to do.

Known as a close friend of Petraeus, Kelley, 37, triggered the FBI investigation that led to the retired four-star general's downfall as CIA director when she complained about getting anonymous, harassing emails. They turned out to have been written by Petraeus' mistress, Broadwell, who apparently was jealous of the attention the general paid to Kelley.

In the course of looking into that matter, federal investigators came across what a Pentagon official called "inappropriate communications" between Allen and Kelley, both of them married.

A senior U.S. official told The Associated Press that other senior U.S. officials who read the emails determined that the exchanges between Allen and Kelley were not sexually explicit or seductive but included pet names such as "sweetheart" or "dear." The official said that while much of the communication ? including some from Allen to Kelley ? is relatively innocuous, some could be construed as unprofessional and would cause a reasonable person to take notice.

That official and others who described the investigation requested anonymity on grounds that they were not authorized to discuss the situation publicly.

Kelley served as a sort of social ambassador for U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Fla., hosting parties for Petraeus when he was commander there from 2008-10. The friendship with the Petraeus began when they arrived in Tampa, and the Kelleys threw a welcome party at their home, a short distance from Central Command headquarters, introducing the new chief and his wife, Holly, to Tampa's elite, according to staffers who served with Petraeus.

Such friendships among senior military commanders and prominent local community leaders are common at any base.

On Capitol Hill, lawmakers complained that they should have been told about the investigation earlier. Morell, who took over Petraeus' duties at the CIA, met with Senate Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and ranking Republican Saxby Chambliss of Georgia on Tuesday.

Asked by reporters if there was a national security breach with the Petraeus affair, Feinstein said, "I have no evidence that there was at this time."

Feinstein said Wednesday that Petraeus would testify to Congress, not about the affair, but about the Libya attack on Sept. 11 that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans, but said no date had been set.

Acting CIA director Morell was expected to meet with the leaders of the House intelligence committee to discuss the Petraeus affair on Wednesday, along with Deputy FBI director Sean Joyce. Ranking member of the intelligence committee Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Md., said the committee would be looking into the FBI handling of the Petraeus affair, and whether intelligence issues were involved.

The Senate Armed Services Committee planned to go ahead with Thursday's scheduled confirmation hearing on the nomination of Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, who is to replace Allen as commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, if Allen is indeed promoted.

Sen. Carl Levin, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said Petraeus should still testify about the September attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, "if he has relevant information."

Insights to Characters in Your Memoir | Member Teleseminar by ...

?

Matilda Butler is our guest blogger today, as we prepare for her Member Teleseminar presentation Friday, November 16 11 AM PST. In this post, she reveals secrets about how you can create believable and accurate character portraits in your memoir drawing upon social science to explain personality types.

Who Was that Masked Man? A Test Reveals All

Matilda Butler, Co-Founder Women?s Memoirs

The Lone Ranger was never unmasked. That worked for the radio and later television series. But as memoir writers we can?t get by with that. Actually, we need to do more than just unmask the people in our stories. We need to dig into the main characters (and yes, real people are characters too) and reveal as much about us and them as possible. Only then can we write an engaging and credible memoir. Only then can the flat words on the page come to life and produce people we continue to remember long after the last page of the book is read and the covers (or digital file) are closed.

In one of the chapters of our new book Writing Alchemy: How to Write Fast and Deep [http://womensmemoirs.com/the-writers-store/books/], my co-author, Kendra Bonnett, and I go into detail about each of five levels of character development ? identity, physical description, demographic factors, psychographic attributes, and personality/habits/quirks. We turn to the social sciences to show you new ways to develop finely etched characters. We even give you numerous tests you can use to learn more about yourself and others in your memoir.

Rather than summarizing that information, let me share one specific detail involved in going deep into character that will help you unlock insights that will add to the richness of your memoir ? that will help your readers care about the people in your stories. This detail, personality, just may hold surprises for you. It did for me.

Whether or not you have taken a personality test, almost everyone knows of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI?). Katherine Cook Briggs (1875-1968) was interested in human development and in 1923 read Carl Jung?s Psychological Types that had been published two years earlier. Shortly afterwards, she shared her thoughts with her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers (1897-1980). This mother-daughter team spent the rest of their lives devoted to making Jungian insights accessible by creating and validating what became 16 personality types.

Before looking at these types, there?s an interesting side note about Isabel Briggs Myers that will interest you as a writer. During the early years of her work on personality types, Isabel became interested in fiction and wrote a mystery called Murder Yet to Come that was published in 1929. The book won the national Detective Murder Mystery Contest, beating out an early Ellery Queen (the pseudonym of Brooklyn cousins) mystery. Why is this of interest to writers? Isabel created her characters based specifically on the personality types she understood through her research.

We probably wouldn?t know about the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator if it weren?t for World War II. In unprecedented numbers, women were moving into the workplace and the mother-daughter team saw that their research could help women identify the type of wartime work that suited their personalities. Today, more than 2 million people take the MBTI annually. The test?s 16 personality types are based on combinations of four pairs of elements:

Extroversion versus Introversion ? how a person gets energy

Sensing versus Intuiting ? how a person gets information

Thinking versus Feeling ? how a person makes decisions

Judging versus Perceiving ? how a person manages her/his lifestyle

These natural preferences (or dichotomies) are not meant to be judgmental; there is no right or wrong. They only help to catalogue and measure our natural predilections for thinking and acting. By identifying a person?s preference between each of the dichotomies, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assigns one of 16 personality types (ESTJ, ESTP, ESFJ, ESFP, ISTJ, ISFJ, etc.)

When you join this Friday?s teleseminar, I?ll give you an example of how delving into personality types has both informed my memoir writing and also helped me better understand my life partner. His behaviors over the years puzzled me. Now I know what?s going on. I even understand why we feel differently at the end of a party.

Try this out for yourself

The MBTI? is a for-fee test. Because we are using personality tests to better understand the people we write about, there is no need for the official test. I have taken a number of the free tests and feel several are excellent. I?ve chosen one to share with you. It is based on Myers-Briggs-type questions and will provide you with information that may lead to insights. For this exercise, I suggest you take the test twice ? once as yourself and once as a second major character in your memoir. This means that over time you may take these tests multiple times since you need to take it for all the major people in your memoir. Since you know the four pairs of elements, you might think you could just specify the personality type without taking the tests. However, the items in the tests help you to think about situations that you and others operate within.

The test is a 36 item test called the Mental Muscle Diagram Indicator?. Each item is a pair of statements with a six point scale. Some of the statement pairs will cause you to think seriously about your choice. You might even think you can?t decide. But just indicate how close you are to the statement you agree with the most. I like this test because you are using a scale for each item rather than a binary yes/no response. After you take the test, you are told how strong you are on each factor and your likely personality type. There is a box where you can buy a report that will provide more details. This is not necessary as the results in the free online report will give you all that you need for developing the description of yourself and others in your memoir. In addition to getting your personality type, the website also provides information on what the types mean so it?s a good learning tool.

http://www.teamtechnology.co.uk/mmdi/questionnaire/

When our students use these tests, they often comment how much they have learned. After a class last month, one student went home and had a long discussion with her husband about their different approaches to decision making. She sent an email thanking me for the insights.

Exercise:

1. Take the test listed above and write down your personality type.

2. Write some of your behaviors that illustrate your personality type. Don?t hurry this step. Go deep.

  1. Take the test a second time trying to be ?in the skin? of the other person. Write down the personality type.
  2. Write some of that person?s behaviors that illustrate the personality type. Again, don?t hurry. As you begin to write you may recall additional behaviors.

Let me conclude with a Eudora Welty quote that shows her take on character description. I think she?d like using personality tests not only for ourselves but also when we let ourselves be another person. She wrote:

?Characters take on life sometimes by luck, but I suspect it is when you can write more entirely out of yourself, inside the skin, heart, mind, and soul of a person who is not yourself, that a character becomes in his own right another human being on the page.?

The Real Homemaker's Challenge:: Approval

If you're new here, I encourage you to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I think there?s are trap I fall into many days, weeks, and even months; especially the Holiday months! Today, I want to talk about Approval: I worrying about gaining the approval of men {or mainly women ;o)} rather than God. I am no longer being hospitable I?m hosting.

The Real Homemaker?s Challenge 1- Approval:

You know what I?m talking about. As we are preparing our homes for guest, these thoughts creep up: ?Is this clean enough for them.? ?Maybe they?ll rave about my creative decorating!? ?They are going to be talking about this party for months!? I worry about each persons? personality and if they will like my tastes, think I?m a weirdo, or be discussed by my kids destruction of the downstairs bathroom after I cleaned it and discovered as the door bell was ringing. I, for real, secretly wonder if they?ll think I?m super cool because I have labels on my kids toys and when they get here, it appears that they actually put them where they?re supposed to go. {oops, not so secret anymore}
Sorry, did I miss yours? Feel free to list them in the comment section below. We?re here to confess it and move past it!

When you hear those unhealthy thoughts of approval creep up in your head, begin praying. I am not saying this to sound all spiritual, I?m telling you this because it?s tried and true. It?s much harder to wonder what another man is thinking of your cute new outfit when you?re eyes are focused on the loving gaze of your hubs! So it is with the approval of men and women, if you are focused on what your Father approves of, you?ll be less likely to be so concerned about what others approve of.?

Things I like to pray for when prepping:

  • Jesus, let my house be clean enough that my guest feel comfortable in this space.
  • Jesus, allow my meal to give their bodies just what they need today.
  • Jesus, help me show patience to my children so I may show your love through calm parenting while possibly stressed with guest(s) in our home.
  • Jesus, prepare my ears and toosh to settle in for long, meaningful conversation that encourages, uplifts, and heals.
  • Jesus, I really want this fellowship {friendship} to grow and honor you.
  • Jesus, may all that goes on in this home glorify you!

I?m sure you can come up with many more simple things to ask of Jesus when preparing your heart to be hospitable rather than host. I want to provide some other resources the Homemaker?s Challenge already has to keep the focus on glorifying God this season and through that hopefully bless those who come through our homes.

(AP) ? Firefighters using a sledgehammer forced open a barricaded door to a family's garage and found five people, two dogs and a cat inside, all dead of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning in a possible murder-suicide amid a custody dispute.

The bodies of three children, their uncle and their grandmother were found Monday in a car in the garage, and a truck was running with hoses leading from the exhaust into the car, police said.

They were identified as 54-year-old Sandy Ford; her 32-year-old son, Andy Ford; and her grandchildren, 10-year-old Paige Hayes, 6-year-old Logan Hayes and 5-year-old Madalyn Hayes.

The children and Andy Ford all lived with Sandy Ford and her husband, Randy, in the house located in a residential neighborhood close to the Michigan state line.

Sgt. Joe Heffernan said Sandy Ford had primarily taken care of the children at her residence for the last four years, but their parents ? the Fords' daughter, Mandy Hayes, and the children's father, Chris Hayes ? were trying to regain full custody of them. He said Sandy Ford was upset about that, and he believes that was the motive for the murder-suicide.

Randy Ford called police Monday afternoon to say that he had returned home and found suspicious notes in the house from his wife, son and grandkids. He said he wasn't able to enter the garage.

Dean Sparks, executive director of Lucas County Children Services, told The Blade newspaper Monday that the children were placed in the Fords' custody in 2009.

He said he did not immediately have much information about the case but he called it "a horrible tragedy."

Heffernan told The Blade that Toledo police were called to the Ford home twice last week. Police were there Nov. 6 on a domestic violence issue concerning Sandy Ford and her daughter and again on Nov. 8 for a custody exchange, he said.

Doug Hall, a neighbor who lives across the street, said he saw the Fords' son and the children raking leaves last week. He said the only unusual thing he's noticed was a police car at the house Nov. 8. He said he didn't know why it was there.

Another neighbor said he saw the kids helping with the yard work and playing in the leaves just a few days ago.

"One minute they're doing the leaves, and then the next there are cop cars all over," Eric Pieper said.

Sylvania Schools Superintendent Brad Rieger told The Blade that the three children were enrolled in Whiteford Elementary School. Paige was a fifth grader, Logan was in second grade, and Madalyn was in kindergarten. He said they have a 9-year-old sister, Blake, who attends Hillview Elementary School.

Rieger said Whiteford is offering counseling for students and staff and offering the family condolences.
