To Pakistan, Shakil Afridi is a traitor who helped a foreign power locate and kill an enemy on its territory. To the US, Dr. Afridi is a hero who will now, apparently, spend the next 33 years of his life in prison.

The US lobbied hard with the Pakistani government to gain Afridi?s release. US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, during a February 2012 visit to Islamabad, urged Pakistani authorities to release Afridi, but Pakistan declined. Given the substantial public anger in Pakistan over the bin Laden killing ? more about the US?s violation of Pakistani sovereignty than for sympathy for the man ? Pakistan sealed Afridi?s fate.

Now his sentencing marks another low-water mark for the US-Pakistani relationship, and highlights how little common ground the two countries share. But expectations for each side are now so low that it?s unlikely the US is going to adopt another full-court press as seen when another US spy ? Raymond Davis ? faced detention in Pakistan.

Think you know Asia? Take our quiz?

To be sure, Afridi?s Pakistani nationality also means the US isn?t going to view his detention in quite the same leave-no-man-behind terms. And the US does not have the same legal arguments of the Geneva Conventions as it did in the case of Mr. Davis.

But there?s also much less riding on the US-Pakistan relationship than even a year ago when the Davis affair erupted. NATO has managed to keep the Afghan war effort going, despite Pakistan cutting off supply lines through its territory. Then, too, trust has evaporated since the discovery of bin Laden in Pakistan and the unauthorized US raid to kill him.

Roller coaster ride

America has had a roller coaster relationship with Pakistan for years. In the 1980s and early 1990s, the US and Pakistan were as thick as thieves, funding, arming, and training Afghan and Pakistani fighters to take on the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. After the Soviets withdrew, and after Pakistan successfully tested a nuclear device, the US imposed strict military sanctions against Pakistan, and left that country with tens of thousands of former militants, thousands of politically charged Islamic seminaries, and a Pakistani economy addicted to foreign aid.

Today, the US and Pakistan have spent a decade ostensibly fighting on the same side against Islamist extremist groups ? some of whom use Pakistan?s less-well-controlled corners, such as Swat and Northern Waziristan, as their bases ? and yet it is not clear how much these two countries share in common anymore.

French court rules Google isn't liable for YouTube bootlegs of TF1 TV shows

Image

France typically hasn't been kind to Google. Today, though, it's cutting some important slack. A court has ruled that the search firm can't be held liable when YouTube members upload clips of their favorite football matches or movies from local network TF1. As in a case involving Dailymotion last year, the judge saw YouTube as just the host for others' videos rather than having any hand in producing the content itself. Not only does the decision let Google off the hook for a possible €141 million ($177 million) fine, it prevents the company from having to pre-screen every video that might be visible in France -- a difficult challenge for a company that takes 72 hours of new video every minute. Google is still facing less-than-cordial attitudes towards its copyright enforcement in other countries, including a zombie Viacom lawsuit in the US, but it now has some extra ammunition if it wants to cite a precedent.

Gain What You Want From Life With EFT Tapping | Acupuncture ...

EFT having more than enough ? Gain What You Want From Life with EFT TappingJust about everybody wants positive things in their life. It is one reason why the world is filled with things like self-Help novels, Simple steps, Positive life coaching workshops, Affirmations and a host of other techniques and sstems for creating many techniques from weight loss to monetary prosperity. To the, For some people no matter they do they seem to fall short of the ideal perfectly positive life where everything flows and is right with the world.
For people with not experienced the joys of a fully positive life and who perhaps constantly deal with a barrage of Why Me or perhaps feel as if they are constantly at odds with the world having to fight for every bit of positive outcome EFT Tapping may help to provide a unique solution. People often do not realize how much they ignore as for emotions. They cave to the provocations of society and repress anything, Which does not need to conform. The basis behind tapping and EFT abundance is startlingly simple. Most people are familiar with acupuncture. The concept behind this different medicinal practice is that there is energy flowing through the body, Illness is the result of a block in the flow of that energy. In acupuncture needles are used and graded at the meridian points of the body. This practice was designed to, The theory is that, Break up the particular block and allow the action of the body to flow freely. Tapping is additional hitting pressure points randomly with fingers in order to help facilitate the breaking of negative energy and allow the body to rebalance itself. When an individual who is looking to bring abundance or prosperity into their lives says an affirmation or writes out a goal; If they truly believe that it is achievable to achieve this goal, Then emotionally just about every flinching. In order to move on from a particular emotional event and deal with those emotions without permitting them to affect the outcome of a situation a practitioner must first look at, Acknowledge and then choose to move on from the unique thoughts and emotions being generated. They acknowledge these feelings and thoughts by going for voice either in their heads or aloud while tapping on specific points. They make certain you add a positive spin. An example would be setting a goal and have that flinch say it isn?t feasible. This helps to boost the new thoughts and counteract the old negative patterns. Often these patterns and system is set from childhood.

Flapping protective wings increase lift

New research from Lund University in Sweden reveals the value of carrying two layers of wings around. The researchers studied dung beetles and the way their protective forewings actually function. These wings do not only protect but also help the beetles to lift off from the ground albeit at a cost.

The forewings of beetles, the elytra, are hardened structures which protect the insect's flying wings and body. The function of the forewings in flight has been questioned, which is what prompted researchers at Lund University's Department of Biology to study how the forewings and the underlying flying wings work in dung beetles. The researchers studied the air flow created by the wings when the beetles fly in a wind tunnel. The wind tunnel in Lund is one of a few of its kind in the world.

"The results show that the forewings, which are held out and flap during flight, generate lift, helping the beetles to stay airborne", says Christoffer Johansson Westheim, researcher at Lund University.

The study also shows, however, that the beetles are less effective at generating lift than other animals, as a result of their forewings negatively affecting their flying wings. Thus the protection afforded by the hardened forewings comes at a cost in the form of lower efficiency in flight. One conclusion to be drawn from this is that if the flying wings alone could provide enough power to keep the insect in flight, the forewings would fold back over the body while the beetle is flying, which is precisely what happens in some species. The study is the first of its kind on beetles, but the researchers consider that the results could apply generally to beetles whose flying wings flap behind forewings despite the fact that the dung beetles are a fairly extreme case, with a body weight of 5-7 grams and a wingspan of around 15 centimetres.

The beetles used in the current study were captured in South Africa, where they normally fly at night over open terrain, on the hunt for dung. Their flight speed is high and the dung beetles are hardly known for their manoeuvrability. They often miss the dung they are looking for and land some way away from it, but they prefer to walk the last distance rather than attempt a more accurate landing. The research study is part of a project aiming to understand the adaptations of various animals to flight, and how the animals' different origins affect their capacity to fly.

Put casino at Downs: Star readers - The Sudbury Star - Ontario, CA

By HAROLD CARMICHAEL, THE SUDBURY STAR

Posted 14 hours ago

When it comes to selecting a home for Sudbury's new casino, a majority of Sudbury Star readers would like to see it where the current gambling facility is located -- Sudbury Downs.

As of early Sunday afternoon, a total of 320 readers or 33% voted for the new, larger casino to be located at the racetrack, which currently houses The Slots at Sudbury Downs.

The downtown received 250 votes (25%), while the south end got 94 votes (10%). Coming in third was 'I'm opposed to casinos' with 199 votes (20%).

Other options received only a small percentage of votes each: New Sudbury (51 votes -- 5%); Valley East (54 -- 5%); and somewhere else (16 votes -- 2%).

The majority of the more than 50 callers who voted on the newspaper's hotline were split between the downtown and Sudbury Downs in Chelmsford. There was the occasional vote of support for the south end and Valley East, with a handful of people opposed to casinos as a whole.

"When it first came around, Sudbury didn't want anything to do with it," said one male caller, who favoured Chelmsford. "Why should they have it now?"

"It should be downtown," said one woman. "Then, at least, they would fix the downtown streets."

"Most of the councillors didn't want it downtown in the first place and the south end is expanding very fast," said one man who suggested the casino should go near the Southridge Mall.

"Chelmsford at Sudbury Downs," said one woman. "No one is going to drive into downtown Sudbury. I can't believe they are talking about destroying the racing industry in Sudbury."

"It would be too easy for people on welfare to go in and spend their money," said one woman who is opposed to casinos.

"There are enough people on welfare in Sudbury," said another woman who is opposed to casinos. "We don't need it to make more people poor."

"They are not gaming and entertainment," said yet another woman opposed to casinos. "I call it gambling and corruption of people's lives."

In this image taken from video, Miami police officers stand watch near a naked man, second from right, who was shot dead by a police officer when he refused to stop chewing on the face of the naked man next to him, partially obscured by a railing, on the MacArthur Causeway ramp onto Northeast 13th Street in Miami, Saturday, May 26, 2012. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital. Police say neither man's identity is known. (AP Photo/The Miami Herald) MAGS OUT

(AP) ? A witness says a naked man chewing on the face of another naked man on a downtown highway ramp kept eating and growled at a police officer who fatally shot him to make him stop.

Larry Vega told WSVN-TV in Miami (http://bit.ly/L6kwWt) that he was riding his bicycle Saturday afternoon off the MacArthur Causeway that connects downtown Miami with Miami Beach when he saw the savage attack on the bridge's off-ramp.

"The guy was, like, tearing him to pieces with his mouth, so I told him, 'Get off!'" Vega said. "The guy just kept eating the other guy away, like, ripping his skin."

The slain man was identified by the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner's office as Rudy Eugene, 31, Miami television station WFOR (http://cbsloc.al/LZlxol) reported.

Vega flagged down a Miami police officer, who he said repeatedly ordered the attacker to get off the victim. The attacker just picked his head up and growled at the officer, Vega said.

As the attack continued, Vega said the officer shot the attacker, who continued chewing the victim's face. The officer fired again, killing the attacker.

Miami police have released few details about the attack, other than confirming that there was a fatal officer-involved shooting. The name of the victim, who was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, had not been immediately determined by authorities, said Detective William Moreno. Messages left Monday for a police spokesman were not immediately returned.

A spokeswoman said Monday that the hospital would not be releasing any information about him.

A surveillance video camera from The Miami Herald building nearby captured images of the men's naked legs lying side by side after the shooting.

Vega said the victim appeared gravely injured.

"It was just a blob of blood," Vega said. "You couldn't really see, it was just blood all over the place."
