Thompson sets Oregon record, Ducks off to good start at NCAA's

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Lanie Thompson set the school record in the women?s 3,000 meter steeplechase and Luke Puskedra was fourth in the 10,000 meters to highlight a nearly perfect first day of the NCAA Track & Field Championships in front of 4,052 fans Wednesday at Drake Stadium.?

Oregon?s women also advanced English Gardner in the 100 meters, Phyllis Francis in the 400, Anne Kesselring and Laura Roesler in the 800, Kimber Mattox in the steeplechase and the 4x100 meter relay team on to finals. For the men, Mike Berry moved on in the 400 meters, while Elijah Greer advanced in the 800.?

"It was a good day. It?s always good not to be surprised on the first day," said Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna. "We still have a long way to go."?

Thompson was in sixth place a few paces behind the lead pack in the first heat when she made her move with two laps remaining. She caught the leaders with a lap to go and then pushed the pace before finishing second to Colorado?s Shalaya Kipp. Kipp won in 9:59.18, with Thompson next in 9:59.90.?

"I wanted to treat today as a final and just qualify," said Thompson. "I wasn?t really trying to set a record or anything, but I knew I had this race in me."?

The sophomore from High Bridge, N.J., broke Claire Michel?s year-old school record of 10:02.55.?

Senior Kimber Mattox was seventh heat one in 10:08.39 and advanced to Friday?s final based on time. Junior Taylor Wallace was 10th in 10:35.76.?

In the men?s 10,000 meters, Puskedra was part of a swift lead pack of four runners that broke away from the field midway through the race. The four of Stephen Sambu of Arizona, Chris Derrick of Stanford, Cameron Levins of Southern Utah continued to distance themselves from the field by churning through impressive 67 and 68 second laps. The three pulled away from Puskedra with two laps remaining. Levins won in 28:07.14.?

"It feels pretty good to be in that company," said Puskedra. "It was fun out there."?

Puskedra, a senior from Ogden, Utah, was fourth in 28:24.24, marking his best NCAA showing in his final race as a Duck.

Earlier in the day, Gardner ran the fastest qualifying time in the women?s 100 meters to advance to Friday?s final. She got out of the blocks quickly and held on to win her heat in 11.10.?

"It wasn?t the best race," said Gardner. "I still have a lot of technical things to work on."?

Gardner was also part of Oregon?s impressive 4x100 relay team that ran the second-fastest time in school history, 43.32, finishing second to Texas A&M in its semifinal heat to automatically advance to Saturday?s final.?

Phyllis Francis led off, and gave the baton to Gardner, who powered Oregon to the lead on the back stretch. Gardner handed off to Lauryn Newson, followed by Amber Purvis, who came in just behind Texas A&M?s 42.90. Oregon?s time was the third fastest overall on Wednesday.?

"I?m very proud about the relay," said an excited Gardner.?

Oregon was also strong in the 800 meters where two women and one man advanced.?

Laura Roesler set a big personal-best to finish second in the final heat in 2:02.09, the fifth fastest time in school history. She let Chanelle Price of Tennessee take the race out on a swift pace, before closing with a big kick over the last 150 meters to easily advance to Friday?s final. Price won in 2:01.66.

"It felt really good because I knew my training was there," said the Fargo, N.D., native. "I just watched Chanelle and didn?t want to get too excited and go too early.?

"It feels really good," said Roesler, who finally bettered her high school PR in the 800. "It?s definitely a weight off my shoulders."?

In the second heat of the 800, Kesselring got boxed in midway through the race, but fought her way out to finish second in 2:02.66 and move on to the final. Freshman Claudia Francis was eighth in her heat in 2:12.74.?

On the men?s side, junior Elijah Greer ended up third in a tight battle in heat three, but advanced to Friday?s final on time. Erik Sowinski of Iowa won in 1:46.09, Edward Kemboi of Iowa State was second in 1:46.20 and Greer was next in 1:46.22. Sophomore Boru Guyota was seventh in his heat in 1:48.01.?

"That was a little bit of a scare there," said Greer. "I think I could have closed that race a little better."?

In the men?s 400 meters, Mike Berry flipped a switch around the last turn and won his heat in 45.05 to qualify for Friday?s final. The sophomore from Seattle, Wash., held off charges from Akheem Gauntlett of Arkansas (45.13) and Deon Lendore of Texas A&M (45.19).?

"I?m excited for the finals because a lot of people ran fast in the prelims," said. Berry. "I felt pretty smooth today."?

The women saw Phyllis Francis win her 400 meter heat in a personal-best 51.22, which was the second-best time in school history, as the sophomore from Queens, N.Y., advanced to Friday?s final. Sophomore Chizoba Okodogbe was sixth in her heat in 53.38 and did not advance.?

Also Wednesday, Dakotah Keys set personal bests in both decathlon running events to stand 16th after day one with 3,789 points. The freshman from Sweet Home, Ore., opened the day by running 11.14 in the 100 meters and closed it by timing 50.15, both PRs.?

In between, Keys went 22-2.5/6.77m in the long jump, 6-6.25/1.99m in the high jump and 38-10.25/11.84m in the shot put.?

"It wasn?t a great day for me, but I?m still in it," said Keys. "Some things didn?t go as well as I wanted, but you can?t let yourself get out of the game.?

"I just wanted to forget everything else and PR in the 400."?

The men?s 4x100 team of Dior Mathis, Arthur Delaney, Joeal Hotchkins, Dior Mathis and Berry was sixth in their heat in 40.03.

Dismembered bodies of 14 reported dumped in northern Mexico

MEXICO CITY -- The remains of at least 14 bodies were found Thursday in an abandoned vehicle in a northern Mexican state that has been the scene of a gruesome war between drug-trafficking gangs, according to news reports.

Early reports said authorities found the abandoned cargo truck in Ciudad Mante, about 250 miles south of the U.S. border in northeastern Tamaulipas state. The Spanish news agency Efe, quoting an unnamed official, said the dead included 11 men and three women. The mutilated bodies were accompanied by a banner taking credit for the killings, but the official did not disclose its contents.

Tamaulipas,?which is next to Texas, has been rocked for months by a feud between the Gulf cartel and an ultra-violent gang of former allies known as the Zetas. The struggle has grown more bloody as a trafficking group led by Joaquin ?Chapo? Guzman, from the northwestern state of Sinaloa, has apparently joined the fight against the Zetas as? part of a wider struggle.

On May 4, the turf war left 23 people dead in the border city of Nuevo Laredo. Nine of the dead were hanged from a bridge; 14 others were mutilated and dumped.

Violent struggles for control of smuggling routes leading to the United States have helped fuel frightening levels of violence in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon took office in late 2006, announcing that he would crack down on drug cartels.

The death toll now exceeds 50,000, and residents in the worst-hit zones, including much of Tamaulipas, live as if under occupation.

Molecular mechanism associated with human immune disorder, XLP disease, explained

ScienceDaily (June 7, 2012) ? A team of researchers at the IRCM led by Dr. Andr? Veillette made an important breakthrough in the field of immunology, which will be published online June 7 by the scientific journal Immunity. The scientists explained a poorly understood molecular mechanism associated with a human immune disorder known as XLP disease or Duncan's syndrome.

"We studied the SAP molecule, which plays a critical role in multiple different types of immune cells," says Dr. Veillette, Director of the Molecular Oncology research unit at the IRCM. "More specifically, we wanted to understand why SAP is an essential component of natural killer cells' ability to eliminate abnormal blood cells."

Natural killer (NK) cells are crucial to the immune system, and provide rapid responses against cancer and virus-infected cells, especially blood cells as can be found in leukemia and lymphomas. Patients with XLP are at a high risk of developing lymphomas.

"Until now, the way by which SAP enhances NK cells' response to abnormal blood cells was not well understood," explains Zhongjun Dong, former researcher in Dr. Veillette's laboratory and first author of the article. "We discovered that SAP stimulates the function of NK cells through a double mechanism. On one hand, it couples the necessary genes and enzymes to increase NK cell responses, and on the other hand, it prevents genes from inhibiting these responses." Dr. Dong is now a professor at Tsinghua University, a leading university in China.

"The SAP molecule is important in immunity, as it is associated with most cases of XLP disease," adds Dr. Veillette. "In addition, our findings may have implications on the role of SAP in other diseases such as lupus and arthritis."

According to the XLP Research Trust, X-linked lymphoproliferative disease (XLP), also known as Duncan's syndrome, is a fatal disease affecting boys worldwide. The cause of the condition was only found in 1998, so many cases may not yet have been properly diagnosed. If untreated, approximately 70% of patients with XLP die by the age of 10.

Dr. Veillette's research is funded by the Canada Research Chairs program and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR). "I applaud Dr. Veillette and his team for their research in the field of human immune disorder and their breakthrough discovery in understanding the role of the SAP protein in controlling abnormal blood cells," said Dr. Marc Ouellette, Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Infection and Immunity.

Obama vows 'zero tolerance' for national security leaks

Obama at the White House Friday (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

President Barack Obama indignantly hit back Friday at "offensive" charges that his administration disclosed vital national security secrets to beef up his image in an election year, insisting he has a "zero tolerance" approach to leaks that endanger America's interests.

And Obama, speaking at a hastily called session with reporters in the White House briefing room, defended his handling of the weak economy, insisting that "the private sector is doing fine." He blamed cuts in government spending and "headwinds" from Europe for sluggish growth.

That drew an immediate rebuke from Mitt Romney, who declared at a rally in Council Bluffs, Iowa, that the president was "defining what it means to be distracted and out of touch."

"For the President of the United States to stand up and say the private sector is doing fine is going to go down in history. It's an extraordinary miscalculation and misunderstanding by a President who is out of touch," Romney said.

Obama weighed in publicly for the first time on Congressional anger at a series of news reports packed with details about programs like America's targeted assassination of suspected extremists and its covert cyberwar on Iran's nuclear activities.

"We have mechanisms in place where, if we can root out folks who have leaked, they will suffer consequences. In some cases it's criminal, these are criminal acts when they release information like this. And we will conduct thorough investigations as we have in the past," he said.

"We're dealing with issues that can tough on the safety and security of the American people, our families, or our military personnel, or our allies. And so we don't play with that," the president said.

Obama faces escalating pressure from Congress to ferret out the sources of the revelations.

In a rare and sharply worded rebuke, the top Democrats and Republicans on Congress's Intelligence Committees said this week that the disclosures endanger national security and vowed to get to the bottom of who was behind them. Some Republicans, like Senator John Cornyn, have pushed for an independent investigation, saying that the Obama administration can't be trusted to police itself. Obama's remarks about existing mechanisms appeared to be a rejection of that idea, which his spokesman also dismissed on Thursday.

Asked about the news reports, Obama said he would not confirm "the details of what are supposed to be classified items."

"The notion that my White House would purposely release classified national security information is offensive. It's wrong," he declared.

"They're classified for a reason: Because they're sensitive, and because the people involved may in some cases be in danger if they're carrying out some of these missions," the president said.

"And when this information -- or reports whether true or false -- surface on the front page of newspapers that makes the job of folks on the front lines tougher, and it makes my job tougher, which is why since I've been in office my attitude has been zero tolerance for these kinds of leaks and speculation," he said."It is a source of consistent frustration -- not just for my administration but for previous administrations -- when this stuff happens. And we will continue to let everybody know in government, or after they leave government, that they have certain obligations that they should carry out," he said.

Pressed on whether investigations were ongoing, Obama sidestepped the question. "We consistently, whenever there is classified information that is put out into the public, we try to find out where that came from," he said.

The White House had touted Obama's hastily announced appearance ? reporters were notified shortly before 9 a.m. ? as another opportunity to use his bully pulpit on the economy. And he made the most of it.

The president heaped pressure on Congress to approve his stalled plan to fight unemployment, charging that stubborn Republican opposition had thwarted the creation of one million new jobs, and blaming "headwinds" from Europe's debt crisis for weak growth.

"Given the signs of weakness in the world economy, not just in Europe but also some softening in Asia, it's critical that we take the actions we can to strengthen the American economy right now," Obama said.

If lawmakers had approved his jobs blueprint in full last year, "we'd be on track to have a million more Americans working this year, the unemployment rate would be lower, our economy would be stronger," said Obama. "Of course, Congress refused."

"In light of the headwinds that we're facing right now, I urge them to reconsider," Obama said.

With stubbornly high joblessness weighing down his hopes for reelection, the president noted that Europe's troubles were partly to blame.

The "threat of renewed recession" there " matters to us because Europe is our largest economic trading partner," he said, urging key leaders there to take steps to address the continent's troubles.

He pressed Europe to stabilize its financial system, inject capital into weak banks, and craft a framework for closer cooperation on government budgets and banking policy.

"These decisions are fundamentally in the hands of Europe's leaders," he said. "Their success is good for us, and the sooner that they act, and the more decisive and concrete their actions, the sooner people and markets will regain some confidence and the cheaper the costs of cleanup will be down the road."

Obama spoke after the Labor Department reported that the number of people applying for jobless benefits dipped last week for the first time in five weeks. The figure slipped 12,000 to 377,000. The news was seen as suggesting only timid job growth. The embattled president's greatest vulnerability as he seeks reelection is the weak economy.

Even before word came down that Obama would be discussing the "headwinds" from Europe, the Republican National Committee released a mocking ad cataloguing the number of times he has used the term to explain why the economy is struggling.

Obama and senior aides have repeatedly cited events outside of their control when asked about anemic job growth, from the European crisis (which is now hurting American exports) to the devastating earthquake in Japan (which dampened growth in a major trading partner), to a slowdown in China (which weighs on the global economy).

Republicans wed to defeating him in November have charged that the administration is merely trying to distract from what they describe as Obama's failed policies.

"Whether the president wants to acknowledge it or not, we are now living in the Obama Economy," countered Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. "No 'post-it note' proposal can reverse the damage done by his policies over the past three and a half years."

McConnell called Obama's push for spending "baffling" and said a better remedy for the ailing economy would be the extension of the Bush-era tax cuts.

But they acknowledge that the situation across the Atlantic is infecting the American economy.

"The problems in Europe are serious.? Their recession is affecting our economic growth today, and I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel," Republican House Speaker John Boehner told reporters on Thursday.

Obama has redoubled his efforts to get Congress to pass at least some elements of his jobs plan, which aims to protect the jobs of teachers, firefighters, and police officers threatened by state and local spending cuts, and calls for boosting infrastructure spending at a time when the nation's crumbling bridges and roads hurt commerce and historically low interest rates take some of the sting out of borrowing for such projects.

House Republicans have hit back, saying that they have passed 30 bills aimed at creating jobs, only to see them die in the Democratic-held Senate.

But "the recipes that they're (Republicans are) promoting are basically the kinds of policies that would add weakness to the economy, would result in further layoffs, would not provide relief in the housing market," Obama charged.

"We've created 4.3 million new jobs over the past 27 months, over 800,000 just this year alone. The private sector's doing fine, where we're seeing weaknesses in our economy" it's in cash-strapped state and local governments that are laying off workers, the president said.

Obama also pressed Greek voters, who will soon decide whether their crisis-hit country should stay in Europe's common currency area, the eurozone, not to quit that

"It is in everybody's interest for Greece to remain in the eurozone," he said, warning the Greeks that "their hardships will likely be worse if they choose to exit."
