PFT: No deal imminent between Ravens, Rice

Mike SmithAP

With the Bucs rebuilding, the Panthers building, and the Saints potentially disintegrating, many think the Falcons could easily capture the NFC South title.

Falcons coach Mike Smith isn?t among the many.

During a conference call held in connection with the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe (which will be televised, by the way, by NBC), Smith said that the division is wide open.

?I know that the NFC South has been one the most competitive divisions for a number of years,? Smith said, via D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.? ?Most certainly before I got to the Falcons, there was the worst-to-first story for three or four years.? It?s very competitive.?

Making it more competitive is the presence of a quartet of top-notch quarterbacks.

?In the division, we have three outstanding quarterbacks that have proven themselves and then there is the young one in Josh Freeman that is going to be a great quarterback as well,? Smith said.? ?It?s a fun division and I don?t think the offseason is any different.? We all will prepare and get ready to go play.?

Smith realizes that, whether the Falcons get to the postseason by winning the division or via the wild-card route, they won?t be taken seriously until they win a playoff game.

?I think ultimately we are both going to be judged on success in the postseason,? Smith said. ?There have been a lot of teams and a lot of players that have broken through and gotten that first win.? That?s why we are doing everything in our power to figure out how to get that done. . . .? We know that we?re doing it the right way.? We just have to figure out how to play better at the end of the season.?

At the end, middle, and start of the season, Smith has high hopes for second-year skill-position players Julio Jones and Jacquizz Rodgers.? ?They were at a big disadvantage in my opinion last year in terms of coming in on the 25th of July and not really having an opportunity to spend time with the coaching staff and understand the actual sequencing of what a work week should be like,? Smith said.? ?Julio had a very good year for us last year and so did Jacquizz.? I think they?ll be integral parts of the success we have this year.?

The Falcons likely will have success.? But it won?t really be success until they win a playoff game.? The last postseason win came eight years ago, when Mike Vick and company thrashed the Rams, 47-17.

Friends: Jesse Jackson, Jr. in treatment in Ariz.

Once a rising star, the Illinois Representative has not been seen in Congress since early June. Friends and colleagues say Jackson was being treated at a facility in Arizona. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

By Andrea Mitchell, NBC News

Illinois Representative Jesse Jackson, Jr. faced new pressure from Democratic leaders Wednesday to explain his month-long absence from Congress, even as friends and colleagues tell NBC News that he has been at a treatment facility in Arizona.

A family friend who is in close touch with Jackson?s parents says the congressman is suffering from ?severe clinical depression? and has an alcohol problem ? although his wife and staff have a different view of his condition.

His wife, Sandi Jackson, texted NBC Chicago on Wednesday saying that her husband is ?not in rehab.? His staff issued a statement denying Jackson was being treated for alcoholism ? they say he is being treated for a ?mood disorder.?

?The Congressman is receiving intensive medical treatment at a residential facility for a mood disorder,? his office said in the statement. ?He is responding positively to treatment and expected to make a full recovery.?

A statement from Jackson?s physician also said that he is responding well.

Jackson?s father, civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, Sr. told NBC Chicago on Tuesday that his son is under medical supervision and is slowly regaining his strength.

"He is taking his time in his recovery and of course we pray for him and of course the family embraces him. We love him so much," Jesse Jackson, Sr. said.

Jackson has missed more than 80 votes and has not been seen in Congress since early last month, which has not settled well with Democratic colleagues.

Representative Steny Hoyer, Democrat from Maryland, said the congressman and his family should "advise the constituents of his condition. He?s obviously facing a health problem.?

Jackson still faces a House Ethics Committee investigation into whether he used his office to compel former Governor Rod Blagojevich to appoint him to the Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama in 2008. A former fundraiser for Jackson was arrested on June 20 by federal prosecutors in Illinois on unrelated charges. There have also been reported marital problems.

On Wednesday, a close friend of Jackson?s told NBC, "This has all come down on him like an avalanche and there is a good possibility he will have to resign." ?

Capitol Hill correspondent Kelly O?Donnell contributed to this report.

Cano reception during Home Run Derby causes stir

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The relentless booing of the Yankees' Robinson Cano by Kansas City fans during the Home Run Derby on Monday night drew national attention, and in some places scorn.

Fans were upset after the captain of the American League squad said he would choose a hometown player for his four-man team, but instead bypassed Royals star Billy Butler and went with Prince Fielder of the Tigers, Mark Trumbo of the Angels and Jose Bautista of the Blue Jays.

Fielder won the competition, and the AL routed the National League.

Cano wound up going 0 for 10, though, and each failure was met by cheers. Cano brushed off the cold reception, but others weren't so kind to Kansas City. Several national TV broadcasters, radio hosts and columnists called the fans everything from "jerks" to "classless."

"Robinson Cano certainly picked people he thought should be on there," Commissioner Bud Selig told the Baseball Writers' Association of America on Tuesday. "While I understand Kansas City and I understand the whole Billy Butler thing, I really felt very badly last night."

Union head Michael Weiner thought the level of jeering was not justified.

"It struck me that it moved a little bit past traditional, good-natured booing, particularly for an event like that, and got into another area," Weiner said. "But Robinson Cano grew up in the Dominican Republic, plays in the Bronx, plays for the Yankees. He's going to be fine."

Cano said that he was prepared for a frigid reception, even though it appeared to rattle him every time his father, Jose, delivered a pitch that he popped up, fouled off or grounded out.

Yankees teammates Curtis Granderson and CC Sabathia even interrupted the proceedings to give father and son and a pep talk, but it didn't do a whole lot of good.

"It was interesting," Granderson said. "It was one of those things where once it started, everyone else caught on, and the performance that Robbie was able to do just added to it. But it's like Robinson said, we're the Yankees, we get booed all the time."

Yankees star Alex Robinson sent Cano a text message of encouragement - "He said, you know, he's a guy that's looking out for me," Cano said - while several others came to his defense.

"I'm sure it happens in every ballpark, where there's the hometown guy didn't make it, and in Robbie's defense, it's hard to pick three guys," White Sox slugger Adam Dunn said. "It would be hard, man, and it's kind of a tough spot to be put in."

Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun questioned the practice of having players pick the teams.

"I understand why they have a captain, but I also feel like it puts guys in uncomfortable positions," he said, adding that he's certain David Wright of the Mets will be chosen next year, when the All-Star game is played at Citi Field in New York.

"You don't want to deal with what Robinson dealt with," Braun said.

The passionate reaction by Royals fans created plenty of drama, though, particularly in an event that often becomes stale by the time the first round grinds to a conclusion.

Viewership for ESPN was up 3 percent over last year, and in New York, there was a 10 percent increase as hometown fans tuned in to see Cano flame out. There were more than 800,000 Twitter and Facebook comments throughout the night, twice the volume of last year, and Twitter's top 10 trends worldwide were related to the derby when the final round began.

"Kansas City fans are better than that, but I don't get on them," said Chris Berman, who called the derby for ESPN. "I get it, but the three guys he picked were the three top guys."

Butler, who made his first All-Star team this season, did his best to deflect questions about the relentless booing. He said that he appreciated Kansas City fans for their support, and that he spoke to Cano after the derby to make sure everything was fine.

"There are no hard feelings. There never was," Butler said. "Me and Robbie are great friends, we're great competitors, and love playing each other."

Pediatric brain tumors traced to brain stem cells

ScienceDaily (July 9, 2012) ? Scientists showed in mice that disabling a gene linked to a common pediatric tumor disorder, neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), made stem cells from one part of the brain proliferate rapidly. But the same genetic deficit had no effect on stem cells from another brain region.

The results can be explained by differences in the way stem cells from these regions of the brain respond to cancer-causing genetic changes.

NF1 is among the world's most common genetic disorders, occurring in about one of every 3,000 births. It causes a wide range of symptoms, including brain tumors, learning disabilities and attention deficits.

Brain tumors in children with NF1 typically arise in the optic nerve and do not necessarily require treatment. If optic gliomas keep growing, though, they can threaten the child's vision. By learning more about the many factors that contribute to NF1 tumor formation, scientists hope to develop more effective treatments.

"To improve therapy, we need to develop better ways to identify and group tumors based not just on the way they look under the microscope, but also on innate properties of their stem cell progenitors," says David H. Gutmann, MD, PhD, the Donald O. Schnuck Family Professor of Neurology.

The study appears July 9 in Cancer Cell. Gutmann also is the director of the Washington University Neurofibromatosis Center.

In the new study, researchers compared brain stem cells from two primary sources: the third ventricle, located in the midbrain, and the nearby lateral ventricles. Before birth and for a time afterward, both of these areas in the brain are lined with growing stem cells.

First author Da Yong Lee, PhD, a postdoctoral research associate, showed that the cells lining both ventricles are true stem cells capable of becoming nerve and support cells (glia) in the brain. Next, she conducted a detailed analysis of gene expression in both stem cell types.

"There are night-and-day differences between these two groups of stem cells," Gutmann says. "These results show that stem cells are not the same everywhere in the brain, which has real consequences for human neurologic disease."

The third ventricle is close to the optic chiasm, the point where the optic nerves cross and optic gliomas develop in NF1 patients. Lee and Gutmann postulated that stem cells from this ventricle might be the source of progenitor cells that can become gliomas in children with NF1.

To test the theory, they disabled the Nf1 gene in neural stem cells from the third and lateral ventricles in the mice. This same gene is mutated in patients with NF1, increasing their risk of developing tumors.

Lee found that loss of Nf1 activity had little effect on stem cells from the lateral ventricle, but stem cells from the third ventricle began to divide rapidly, a change that puts them closer to becoming tumors.

The third ventricle usually stops supplying stem cells to the brain shortly after birth. When researchers inactivated the Nf1 gene before the third ventricle closed, the mice developed optic gliomas. When they waited until the third ventricle had closed to inactivate the Nf1 gene, gliomas did not develop.

Gutmann plans further studies to determine whether all NF1-related optic gliomas form in cells descended from the third ventricle. He suspects that additional factors are necessary for optic gliomas to form in cooperation with Nf1 gene loss in third-ventricle stem cells.

"We have to recognize that cancers which appear very similar actually represent a collection of quite different diseases," he says. "Tumors are like us -- they're defined by where they live, what their families are like, the traumas they experience growing up, and a variety of other factors. If we can better understand the interplay of these factors, we'll be able to develop treatments that are much more likely to succeed, because they'll target what is unique about a specific patient's tumor."

Roger Federer and Andy Murray have split the first two sets of the Wimbledon final.

Federer is trying to add to his record 16 Grand Slam championships, and tie a record by winning Wimbledon for a seventh time. Murray is trying to become the first British man to win a Grand Slam title since Fred Perry took Wimbledon and the U.S. Championships in 1936.

For Serena Williams, the low point came in early 2011, when she spent hours laying around her home, overwhelmed by a depressing series of health scares that sent her to the hospital repeatedly and kept her away from tennis for 10 months.

The high point came Saturday on Centre Court at Wimbledon, when Williams dropped down to the grass, hands covering her face. She was all the way back, a Grand Slam champion yet again.

GlaxoSmithKline to pay $3B for health fraud

(AP) ? British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline will pay $3 billion in fines ? the largest health care fraud settlement in U.S. history ? for criminal and civil violations involving 10 drugs that are taken by millions of people.

The Justice Department said Monday that GlaxoSmithKline PLC will plead guilty to promoting popular antidepressants Paxil and Wellbutrin for unapproved uses. The company also will plead guilty to failing to report to the government for seven years some safety problems with diabetes drug Avandia, which was restricted in the U.S. and banned in Europe after it was found in 2007 to sharply increase the risks of heart attacks and congestive heart failure.

In addition to the fine, Glaxo agreed to resolve civil liability for promoting Paxil, Wellbutrin, asthma drug Advair and two lesser-known drugs for unapproved uses. The company also resolved accusations that it overcharged the government-funded Medicaid program for some drugs, and that it paid kickbacks to doctors to prescribe several drugs including Flovent for asthma and Valtrex for genital herpes.

Sir Andrew Witty, Glaxo's CEO, expressed regret Monday and said the company has learned "from the mistakes that were made."

This is the latest in a string of settlements related to drug companies putting profits ahead of patients. In recent years, the government has cracked down on drugmakers' tactics, which include marketing medicines for unapproved uses. While doctors are allowed to prescribe medicines for any use, drugmakers cannot promote them in any way that is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

"Let me be clear, we will not tolerate health care fraud," Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole said Monday during a news conference at the Justice Department in Washington.

Glaxo is scheduled to plead guilty to the criminal charges and have the settlement approved at a hearing Thursday in U.S. District Court in Boston. In addition to the $3 billion penalty ? which includes a $1 billion criminal fine and forfeiture and $2 billion to resolve civil claims ? Glaxo agreed to be monitored by the government for five years to ensure that it complies with marketing and other rules.

The case against Glaxo was originally brought in January 2003 by two whistleblowers, former Glaxo sales representatives Greg Thorpe and Blair Hamrick. In January 2011, the federal government joined in the case.

Prosecutors said Glaxo illegally promoted Paxil for treating depression in children from 1998 to 2003, even though it wasn't approved for anyone under age 18. The company also promoted Wellbutrin from 1999 through 2003 for weight loss, sexual dysfunction, substance addictions and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, although it was only approved for treatment of major depression.

Starting in 2001, Thorpe reported to his district manager, then to Glaxo's human resources department and finally to Glaxo's chief of global compliance about a number of improper marketing practices. The compliance chief began an internal investigation, which confirmed Thorpe's allegations through various ways including marketing materials and interviews with Hamrick and other sales representatives, according to lawyers for the two men.

Brian Kenney and Tavy Deming, attorneys for the two salesmen, said top management did nothing to stop the illegal practices, pressured Thorpe to resign and later fired Hamrick for allegedly not cooperating with the company's investigation of one kickback allegation.

According to Deming, Hamrick reported that at a 2000 regional meeting of sales representatives in Las Vegas, they were directed to promote Wellbutrin as the drug that makes patients happy, skinny and sexually turned on, part of a catchy national slogan repeated to doctors.

Thorpe said in a statement Monday that he was penalized after he reported kickbacks being paid to doctors and sales reps encouraging doctors to promote drugs for unapproved uses, including using Paxil and Wellbutrin in children.

"In the end, I was told that my concerns were not valid. I was put on leave" after a 24-year career, Thorpe said. He added that he was told to either "take a severance package or go back to work for the same people, doing the same things I had reported to management."

Thorpe and Hamrick ? and two other sales rep whistleblowers who joined the case shortly after them ? will receive an as-yet undecided portion of the $3 billion settlement.

The Glaxo case underscores how aggressive the Justice Department has become in going after similar cases. In a May settlement, Abbott Laboratories pleaded guilty and agreed to pay the government a $700 million criminal fine and forfeiture for promoting Depakote, approved for bipolar disorder and epilepsy, for use in patients with dementia and autism. That was on top of civil settlements with numerous states and the federal government totaling $800 million.

Prior to the Glaxo settlement, the record-setting case involved Pfizer Inc., the world's biggest drugmaker. It paid the government $2.3 billion in 2009 in criminal and civil fines for improperly marketing 13 different drugs, including erectile-dysfunction drug Viagra and cholesterol fighter Lipitor, the top-selling drug in the world for years. Pfizer was accused of encouraging doctors to prescribe its drugs with free golf, massages and junkets to posh resorts.

"For far too long, we have heard that the pharmaceutical industry views these settlements merely as the cost of doing business," said Acting Assistant Attorney General Stuart F. Delery, head of Justice's civil division. "Today's resolution seeks not only to punish wrongdoing and recover taxpayer dollars, but to ensure GSK's future compliance with the law."

Well, considering that all of our characters are going to be in the hundreds except for some of the Lycans, I figured that some of them have probably met before if not in short or endeaved meetings.

So, this thread is for players to decide how their characters may or may not already know one another and conspire a past between them for resentment or other things etc.

Enjoy!!

Aziel - Coven Leader shall know the soon to be created Shifters Alpha. They have a Frenemies relationship though most dont know that since they havent lived long enough to witness their encounters. So most of their arguments will seem deadly to unknown eyes, yet really both of them would shrug an argument off after some brewding.

Chrome already the no.1 free app for iPhone, iPad

Google only announced and launched Chrome for iOS yesterday, but the browser has already found popularity on Apple's devices.

Chrome quickly jumped to be the app store's top downloaded free app on both iPhone and iPad, and doesn't show signs of letting go of that position.

Chrome on iOS is a universal app, featuring unique gestures controls and screen formatting to best fit each device's screen.

The biggest draw though is the ability to sync tabs, bookmarks, and passwords from your PC or notebook Chrome browser to your other devices - making it an extension of your web browsing on the go.

No default for Chrome

Of course, the downside is that users are unable to set Chrome as the iPhone or iPad's default browser, with that role permanently held by Safari.

There is a workaround though, as developer Jon Abrams created an iOS Safari bookmarklet to open pages in Chrome.

Simply create a bookmark in Safari for the following address: javascript:location.href="googlechrome"+location.href.substring(4);

Name the bookmark something simple like "Open in Chrome," and selecting it will open your current Safari page in Google's browser.

It's hardly a perfect solution, but with Apple's firm grip on iOS default apps, it's the best solution we're likely to get.
