Man given boots by NYPD officer: Street life ?my choice?

A New York City police officer giving boots to a homeless man on Nov. 14 (NYPD/Facebook)

First he was spotted barefoot in Times Square by a police officer who bought him a pair of boots--a moment captured in a heartwarming photo taken by a tourist, posted on Facebook and shared by hundreds of thousands of people.

Then he was spotted barefoot again on the Upper West Side by the New York Times. ("Those shoes are hidden," he said. "They are worth a lot of money?I could lose my life.")

Then the Daily News reported the man people assumed was homeless wasn't homeless at all--and has a Bronx apartment paid for via a combination of rent vouchers, Social Security and military veteran benefits.

Now Jeffrey Tillman--the 54-year-old man at the center of this ongoing, made-for-a-slow-news-day story--says that despite access to federally subsidized shelter, it's his choice to wander the streets.

"I guess you could say I am hard-headed," Tillman told the Daily News for a front-page story published on Sunday.

The South Plainfield, N.J.-native and estranged father of two confirmed what the man's brother, Kirk Hillman, and others said last week: Family and various city organizations have tried for years to help him, but he's turned them all down.

"We love our brother very much," Kirk Hillman said. "Our door is always open to him, but this is a lifestyle he's chosen."

Jeffrey Hillman, who told the tabloid he was diagnosed as bipolar and schizophrenic, came to New York in 2000.

"It was my choice," he said. "Being on the street since then was my choice, too. When I was in the Army, I could have said I was homeless, too. Same thing to me."

Hillman, who was wearing the boots when he spoke to the Daily News, said he's grateful NYPD's Lawrence DePrimo gift.

"A police officer on duty was willing to take his time to help me," Hillman said. "It blew my mind."

And despite reports to the contrary, Hillman claims he does use his apartment--to sleep.

"I'm just out here doing what I'm doing because that's how I know how to do it," he said.

Deficit panel's Simpson hits political 'stupidity'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The co-chairman of President Barack Obama's deficit commission is assailing the politics of political brinksmanship surrounding the "fiscal cliff," saying Congress "put the chain on their own ankle."

Former Sen. Alan Simpson says "you have to have a blend" of revenue increases and spending cuts to achieve a deal to avoid the cliff.

Simpson tells NBC's "Today" show it's ridiculous for Democrats and Republicans to speculate on which party would suffer more if no compromise agreement were achieved. He says, quote, "That's like betting your country. There's stupidity in that. This is big-time stuff."

Speaking of Congress, Simpson says, in his words, "If you gave 90 percent of them a profit-loss statement in one hand and a balance sheet in the other, they wouldn't know how to read it."

Republicans Must Avoid Tax Distraction, Rally to Their Principles

As portions of the Republican Party split over how to tackle fiscal cliff negotiations, Yahoo News asked GOP voters to weigh in: Which camp in the party do they support? Here's one perspective.

COMMENTARY | With political muscle earned from re-election, President Obama masterfully shifted the burden of responsibility in the impending "fiscal cliff" crisis to the Republican House of Representatives. Though Obama's initial proposal began negotiations, the White House refuses to bend on taxes, dismisses legitimate spending cuts, and demonstrates little concern for perpetual trillion-dollar deficits.

In response, Speaker John Boehner has struggled to vocalize a consistent position, knowing compromise could cost the support of his base. While Boehner countered with alternate ways of raising revenue, he seemingly accepts confining the issue to taxes on the wealthy. The conflict was displayed recently when four conservatives lost prime leadership positions in the new Congress.

For this petty display of authority, I'm disappointed in Boehner. There is no justification for pursuing a deal entirely on the president's terms and the move signals that may be the speaker's intent. In contrast, I concur with the tea party belief that spending cuts and deficit-reduction must dominate efforts to avoid the fiscal cliff.

One of my senators, Marco Rubio, capably expressed my beliefs: "As far as rates are concerned, I don't have a religious, spiritual objection to higher tax rates," Rubio told a Washington Idea's forum. "I have an economic objection because of the impact on growth."

Rubio realizes tax hikes are not a solution during economic turmoil and only eradicate a meager 7.5 percent of the deficit. If the Republican Party backs away from long-standing principles, voters' equally empowering choice of a GOP House has been invalidated. No deal is often preferable to an illegitimate one.

S&P cuts Greece's long-term debt rating to 'selective default'

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - TV's top drama is a grisly, sometimes sorrowful series that kills off characters as fast as it introduces them and almost never slows down to explain what's happening. Networks could learn a lot from "The Walking Dead." The AMC series, which ended the first half of its third season Sunday, currently has an average 5.32 rating in the key 18-49 demo. That's better than the rating for any show on television except for NBC's "Sunday Night Football. ...

Otter: Health insurance exchange choice won't please everyone ...

Gov. Butch Otter noted today that a decision on whether to start a state-run health insurance exchange or not will have to be made shortly. ?There's some decisions that are going to have to be made between now and the 14th of December that are going to have a lot of impact on that session,? he said of the upcoming legislative session. ?There's going to be a lot of heavy lifting, because in many ways we're not the architects of these problems but ? I believe ? that we are up to the task.?

He complained about continued changes in federal rules regarding the exchange. ?Every time we're at a point where we think we're going to make a decision on it, then we get another set of rules and regulations that changes the dynamic of what we thought we were dealing with.? He noted that some of his colleagues, other states' Republican governors, have decided to let the feds operate their exchanges because ?they're still philosophically opposed to what is the law, and what is the law of the land. I want to remind you that we are a republic,? Otter said. ?Like it or not, we tried to change the law, we've done everything we possibly could, and now with the best interests of ? Idahoans we now have to make that decision and that decision will come down. It's not going to please everybody, I'm sure. Those of us that have to make the decision probably won't be pleased about?it.?
