Google Wallet hack hits Verizon Galaxy S III

Google Wallet hack hits Verizon Galaxy S III

Verizon may not want you to have Google Wallet on your phone, but that won't stop intrepid rooters and hackers from shoehorning the app into Big Red's handsets. Mike Beauchamp and Dustin Evans took some time away from their recent Kansas City trip (to check out Google Fiber, of course) to get the Mountain View mobile payment solution up and running on a Galaxy S III. Is it more difficult than rooting your device and installing the app? Just a bit. Beauchamp's video doesn't offer much in the way of instruction, but it does show it being used to buy breakfast at Mickey D's. Thankfully, it looks like some folks over at the XDA forums have documented the solution, just check out the more coverage link.

Its not only California that has eye Candy Glenn you need to pay a ...

What is life without a little friendly neighborly rivalry.

Well this is not Pennsic wars but i thought a bit of something to take your mind and eyes off the Olympics and sports or Pennsic Wars was in order.

So last week i took a quick detour on my outing and snapped some pics of my local lumber yard.

The place changed owners in December and boy you can see the difference.

So eat your heart out Glenn and bring the pickup.

Here are loads of pics of some of the sections of this place.

They do the following

1) Huge selection of both local and foreign lumber
2) Turning section with blanks for pens bowls and burls
3) Slabs of all sorts from boules to just one off to custom glue ups all sanded and cut to size
4) For hobbyists a huge shorts section with loads of stock to sift through and not just local either.
5) For contractors they do clear pine for moulding, pine tong and groove for flooring etc and pine beams in cant form.
6) They stock natural thick cut slabs of all sorts i tried to snap a selection.
7) They make pallets and have a machine shop i tried to snap only one of their planers
8) Last but not least they have a stock of Ipe Cedar and Pressure treated lumber for decking boys.

So if ever there was a one stop shop lumber shop this is it.

Oh and they dont mind cutting off a foot or two if the piece is over 8ft long.

I got my eye on a Padauk slab from the boule cut that i showed before at the time of the Lie Neilson tool even taking place there. I got a price this time and the one i show in these pics is $240 which i dont think is bad at all for an 8 ft x 2 ft by 5/4 slab of padauk. Problem is what to do with it. I just feel this is one of those things one needs to grab while the going is good and hold onto it.

If anyone wants thick wood this is THE place. as you can see from a few quick cell phone happy snaps.

I only had a few minutes to spare to get around the place so forgive the pics etc just wanted to do some bragging of what we have in the great white (hot) north.

Marcotte: Single Motherhood OK, Not Mothers ... - Fathers & Families

Is it possible for a person to be able to write but not read? ?I doubt it, but must confess that this nonsense by Amanda Marcotte raises the issue (Slate, 7/24/12). ?Hers is the third in Slate?s series spawned by a New York Times article on the hazards of single motherhood.

You remember Amanda Marcotte. ?She?s the ubiquitous opiner who, long after it was clear that no sex ? much less forced sex ? had occurred in the case of the three Duke lacrosse players falsely accused of rape, claimed that the men had ?held down? their accuser ?and f**ked her.? ?Principled observers doubted the rape claim from Day Two when the men announced that no sex had occurred and allowed police unfettered access to the premises to gather whatever evidence they desired. ?Four months after her libel, the Attorney General of North Carolina took the unprecedented step of finding the three factually innocent of any and all wrongdoing, to Marcotte?s deafening silence. ?With that fealty to intellectual honesty in mind, we can now deal with Marcotte?s decidedly tepid embrace of single motherhood.

Unlike Katie Roiphe, whose failed attempt at the same was tactfully but authoritatively destroyed by Brad Wilcox, Marcotte claims, in a blizzard of made-up statistics, unsupported assertions, non sequiturs and straw-man arguments, that single mothers ?do not necessarily choose to be single.? ?True enough; some fathers die, some go to prison, etc. ?Usually none of that is Mom?s fault, but she?s single nevertheless. ?But how many mothers fall into those categories and how many fall into the ones Marcotte carefully avoids discussing ? divorce and single-mother childbearing?

The answer is that 70% of divorces are filed by women and they do so because they know they?ll get custody of the kids. ?So in fact a lot of those mothers ? the ones without a paramour waiting to marry them ? decide precisely to be single mothers. ?What about the 42% of children born to single mothers? ?That?s about 1.7 million children per year in the United States. ?Now, about half of those have co-habiting fathers, so, though unmarried, they?re not exactly single, but that?s still a hefty number of kids who are either born without a father close at hand or have a father taken from them by the tyranny of the family court system.

And yes, those are choices made by mothers. ?Some of those choices are defensible, some marriages truly are insupportable and sometimes even the pill fails, but Marcotte would like us to believe that, in some way, women have single motherhood foisted on them by??outrageous fortune,? I assume, and of course by men. ?But whatever her actual claims, which aren?t at all clear, for Marcotte, single motherhood must be someone?s fault other than single mothers themselves.

Marcotte?s article is so strange and so nutty that it?s paradoxically hard to criticize. ?How best to convey the secondary-school triviality of it? ?Let?s begin with her naked assertions.

Most women who have children have partners they intend to stay with.

A lot of the time, much-wanted relationships fall apart.

But in a substantial number of cases, the men just quit their families.

That?s why only 41 percent of custodial parents receive child support.

Sixty-two percent of mothers parenting without a man in the house have been married, and most of the rest probably thought that marriage or a long-term commitment was in the cards.

Now, that?s not all of them, but I mention those five because they?re consecutive. ?Five unsupported claims in a row may be a record. ?Marcotte offers nothing at all to back them up and indeed, one of them is just flat wrong. ?Actually, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 50.6% of custodial parents have a child support order, but the factual wrongness of her claim actually obscures its full inaccuracy. ?After all, men are far more likely to be ordered to pay child support than are women. ?The Census Bureau tells us that 55% of non-custodial fathers versus only 30% of non-custodial mothers pay child support and that fathers pay a larger percentage of what they owe than do mothers. ?But Marcotte knows none of that which again urges that question about writing and reading.

Then there?s her claim that ?in a substantial number of cases, the men just quit their families.? ?Really? ?Marcotte gives no facts to back up the claim and a remarkable amount of solid social science casts considerable doubt on it, but again, she? have to have read articles from the Fragile Families and Child Well-being data, Sanford Braver?s ?Divorced Dads,? much of Kathryn Edin?s work, reports from Child Trends, Brinig and Allen?s study of divorce, and countless others. ?It?s impossible to conclude that Marcotte reads at all, otherwise she?d know that fathers of all income levels, racial and ethnic categories, religions, etc., overwhelmingly desire continuing relationships with their kids. ?That?s why fathers don?t tend to file for divorce and mothers do; fathers know they?ll lose their children and mothers know they won?t. ?Divorced fathers are far more likely to remain involved with their children and pay their child support if mothers don?t stand in the way, so many of those who lose contact were shoved aside by their ex-wives and the courts that abet their every move.

In the face of much social science that disproves her thesis, Marcotte opts for baseless assertion that agrees with little but a carefully constructed anti-father zeitgeist.

Marcotte eventually gets down to grappling with the fact that the poor have lower marriage rates than the more affluent and better educated. ?According to her, that actually reflects the superiority of the poor?s commitment to marriage. ?Yes, you read that right.

Wilcox assumes that marriage success is due to commitment to the value of marriage, and because blue state progressives with children break it off less frequently, they must just like marriage more. But?a study at UCLA demonstrates he has it backwards: ?Poor people hold more traditional values toward marriage and divorce than people with moderate and higher incomes,? that is to say, they?re more ?marriage-minded?.

In the first place, Wilcox assumes no such thing. ?What he does is what so many other observers have done; he simply states that the poor tend to not get married and, particularly when kids come along, that tends to keep them poor. ?I?m perfectly willing to accept that, when asked their views on the subjects of marriage and children, the poor may tend to express more conservative ones than do the better off. ?But whatever happens in the deep recesses of their hearts, it?s what they do that matters. ?Children of single mothers don?t do as well as those of intact families because they?re children of single mothers, not because of how their mothers answer a survey. ?But to Marcotte, the reverse is true; being a single mother means that you value marriage while being married means you don?t.

In his answer to Katie Roiphe, Brad Wilcox asked a question similar to one I had asked in my review of her article.

Surely a progressive like Roiphe should be concerned about all this, rather than dismissing the recent?New York Times?news story on the marriage divide in America as a ?puritanical and alarmist rumination on the decline of the American family.? Since when is it puritanical and alarmist in progressive circles to raise the red flag about a major driver of social and economic inequality?

Given the fact that single mothers and their children are far more likely to live in poverty than are their married peers and their children, what?s a liberal/progressive doing plumping for single motherhood? ?Since the children of single mothers are much more likely than the children of intact families to remain stuck on the bottom rungs of the economic ladder, why do ?progressives? like Roiphe and Marcotte encourage women to have children without a man to help support and care for them?

Wilcox asked the question and Marcotte responded to his article, but tellingly, she failed to answer it. ?Although it?s an obvious criticism of her and her article, Roiphe completely refused to address it. ?By now, the reason should be clear ? they can?t. ?The simple fact is that the Left?s appropriate concern for the welfare of the poor and working classes is on a collision course with feminism?s disdain for fathers and marriage. ?Fatherlessness and non-marital childbearing condemn many women and children to lives on the edge. ?It?s time leftists made a choice.

But I don?t expect Amanda Marcotte to make the hard decisions required when two ?isms? collide. ?My guess is she doesn?t even know there?s an accident already in progress. ?After all, to know that would take some reading.

Thanks to Glenn for the heads-up.

Overnight ratings up for first night

NEW YORK (AP) ? Preliminary estimates show that Saturday night's NBC telecast scored the highest ratings for the first evening of an Olympics competition outside of the United States.

The Nielsen company said Sunday that its measurement of the nation's largest cities showed ratings for the Olympics telecast were up 8 percent over opening night in Beijing four years ago. A fuller measurement of viewership is expected later on Sunday.

NBC was the target of many Twitter complaints on Saturday for not telecasting the marquee men's swimming competition live, instead showing it on tape delay in prime-time. But prime-time ratings are the report card that the company cares about the most and, thus far, viewers are responding to the strategy.

Evolution: Out Of The Sea

You can also follow and contribute to the conversations on social media by using the #BeginScights hashtag. ??Bora

In the beginning, the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep, as a giant cloud of gas and dust collapsed to form our solar system. The planets were forged as the nebula spun, jolted into motion by a nearby supernova, and in the center, the most rapid compression of particles ignited to become our sun. Around 4.5 billion years ago, a molten earth began to cool. Violent collisions with comets and asteroids brought the fluid of life ? water ? and the clouds and oceans began to take shape. It wasn?t until a billion years later that the first life was brought forth, filling the atmosphere with oxygen.

Over the next few billion years, single-celled organisms fused and became multicellular; body plans diversified and radiated, exploding into an array of invertebrates. Yet all this abundance and life was restricted to the seas, and a vast and bountiful land sat unused. Around 530 million years ago, there is evidence that centipede-like animals began to explore the world above water. Somewhere around 430 million years ago, plants and colonized the bare earth, creating a land rich in food and resources, while fish evolved from ancestral vertebrates in the sea. It was another 30 million years before those prehistoric fish crawled out of the water and began the evolutionary lineage we sit atop today. To understand life as we know it, we have to look back at where we came from, and understand how our ancestors braved a brand new world above the waves.

It was a small step for fish, but a giant leap for animalkind. Though, looking at modern fish species, it?s not so hard to envision the slow adaptation to life out of the sea. Just the other day, I was feeding my pet scorpionfish Stumpy, and he surprised me with this slow, deliberate crawl towards his food:

A number of fish exhibit traits which are not unlike those of the first tetrapods: the four-limbed vertebrates that first braved life on land, direct descendants of ancient fish. Many of Stumpy?s relatives, including the gurnards, are known for their ?walking? behaviors. Similarly, mudskippers have adapted anatomically and behaviorally to survive on land. Not only can they use their fins to skip from place to place, they can breathe through their skin like amphibians do, allowing them to survive when they leave their shallow pools. Walking catfishes have modified their respiratory system so much that they can survive days out of water. But all of these are only glimpses at how the first tetrapods began, as none of these animals has fully adapted to life on land. To understand how tetrapods achieved such a feat, we must first understand the barriers that lay between their life under the sea and the land above that awaited them.

Living in air instead of water is fraught with difficulties. Locomotion is one problem, though as evolution in a number of lineages has shown, not as big a problem as you might think. Still, while mudskippers and catfish seem to walk with ease, the same cannot be said of our ancestors. Some of the earliest tetrapods, like Ichthyostega were quite cumbersome on land, and likely spent most of their time in the comfort of water. These first tetrapods came from an ancient lineages of fishes called the Sarcopterygii or Lobe-Finned Fish, of which only a few survive today. As the name implies, these animals have meaty, paddle-like fins instead of the flimsy rays of most modern day fish species. These lobe fins, covered with flesh, were ripe for adapting into limbs.

But these early tetrapods had to develop more than a new way to walk ? their entire skeletons had to change to support more weight, as water supports mass in a way that air simply doesn?t. Each vertebrae had to become stronger for support. Ribs and vertebrae changed shape and evolved for extra support and to better distribute weight. Skulls disconnected, and necks evolved to allow better mobility of the head and to absorb the shock of walking. Bones were lost and shifted, streamlining the limbs and creating the five-digit pattern that is still reflected in our own hands and feet. Joints articulated for movement, and rotated forward to allow four-legged crawling. Overall, it took a long 30 million years or so to develop a body plan fit for walking on land.

At the same time, these cumbersome wanna-be land dwellers faced another obstacle: the air itself. With gills adept at drawing oxygen from water, early tetrapods were ill-equipped to breathing air. While many think that early tetrapods transformed their gills into lungs, this actually isn?t true ? instead, it was the fish?s digestive system that adapted to form lungs. The first tetrapods to leave the water breathed by swallowing air and absorbing oxygen in their gut. Over time, a special pocket formed, allowing for better gas exchange. In many fish, a similar structure ? called a swim bladder ? exists which allows them to adjust buoyancy in the water, and thus many have hypothesized that tetrapod lungs are co-opted swim bladders. In fact, exactly when tetrapods developed lungs is unclear. While the only surviving relatives to early tetrapods ? the lungfishes ? also possess lungs (if their name didn?t give that away), many fossil tetrapods don?t seem to have them, suggesting that lungfish independently evolved their ability to breathe air. What we do know is that it wasn?t until around 360 million years ago that tetrapods truly breathed like their modern descendants.

The other trouble with air is that it tends to make things dry. You may have heard the statistic that our bodies are 98% water, but as well-evolved land organisms we have highly evolved structures which ensure that all that water doesn?t simply evaporate. The early tetrapods needed to develop these on their own. At first, like the amphibians that would arise from them, many tetrapods likely stuck to moist habitats to avoid water loss. But eventually, to conquer dry lands and deserts, animals had to find another way to keep themselves from drying out. It?s likely that many of the early tetrapods began experimenting with ways to waterproof their skin. Even more important was the issue of dry eggs. Amphibians solve the dryness issue by laying their eggs in water, but the tetrapods which conquered land didn?t have that luxury.

The solution to land?s dry nature was to encase eggs in a number of membrane layers, in what is now known as an amniote egg. Even our own children reflect this, as human babies still grow in an amniotic sac that surrounds the fetus, even though we no longer lay eggs. This crucial adaptation allowed animals to cut ties with watery habitats, and distinguishes the major lineage of tetrapods, including reptiles, birds and mammals, from amphibians.

These crucial adaptations to tetrapod skeletons and anatomy allowed them to conquer the world above the waves. Without their evolutionary ingenuity, a diverse set of animals, including all mammals, would not be where they are today. Yet still we barely understand the ecological settings that drove these early animals out of the sea. Did dry land offer an endless bounty of food not to be passed up? Perhaps, but there is evidence that our ancestors braved the dry world very early on, even before most terrestrial plants or insects, so it?s possible earth was barren. Were they escaping competition and predation in the deep? Or did was land important for some yet undetermined reason? We may never know. But as we reflect upon our beginnings, we have to give credit to the daring animals that began the diverse evolutionary lineage we are a part of. While we may never understand why they left the water, we are thankful that they did.
