Yemen embassy breach lays bare anti-US sentiment, military weakness

Today's protests in Yemen were called for in response to the infamous anti-Islam film, but they come against the backdrop of continued political instability and rising anti-US sentiment.

Police use water cannons to disperse protesters near the US Embassy during a protest about a film ridiculing Islam's Prophet Muhammad, in Sanaa, Yemen, Thursday, Sept. 13. Yemen's president has apologized to President Barack Obama and the American people and vowing to conduct a full investigation into the attack.

As violent protests against an obscure anti-Islamic film spread to Yemen, parts of the capital of Sanaa erupted, underscoring the continuing instability facing the country and laying bare simmering anti-American sentiments.
?
A number of Yemeni clerics, including Sheikh Abdul Majid al-Zindani, a leading Sunni religious leader, called for the protests.?Participants said they were initially planned as peaceful demonstrations, but as they escalated, some?people attempted to lay siege to the US embassy, with some of them clearing the compound's outer security perimeter, despite the presence of Yemeni security forces. Some demonstrators burned cars and smashed the windows of security buildings as they set an American flag on fire.

Yemeni forces were eventually able to repel the attack, which failed to reach the main buildings of the embassy compound, but it took time to disperse the hundreds of demonstrators in the largely youthful crowd shouting defiant chants, vowing to sacrifice themselves to protect the honor of the prophet Muhammad and, in some cases, lobbing rocks at the Yemeni forces trying to hold them back. A tense standoff ensued between protesters and harried troops who launched tear gas and fired warning shots in the air in a scrambled attempt to disperse the crowd, which diminished by early afternoon.?

At least 13 demonstrators were wounded and one was reported killed by a stray warning shot. An embassy spokesman confirmed that all members of their staff were ?present and accounted for.??

The attack was a stunning security breach of the US embassy, considered one of the most secure buildings in the capital city. Security was tightened in the aftermath of two 2008 attacks on the embassy, both of which were blamed on Al Qaeda-linked operatives.
?
Yemeni President Abdo Rabbu Mansour Hadi issued a condemnation immediately after the attack, apologizing to President Barack Obama and the American people and vowing to conduct a full investigation into the attack.
?
But while the breach of the embassy appeared to be a spontaneous outgrowth of the demonstration, many here have argued that today?s events were best seen in context of both the nation?s continuing instability and simmering anger at American policies in Yemen.

In his statement, President Hadi alluded to lingering divisions within the Yemeni military, the result of last year?s uprising against his predecessor, Ali Abdullah Saleh, saying that they ?contributed to the amplification? of today?s incident.?Despite Mr. Saleh's removal from power, many analysts continue to express concerns over what they characterize as "divided loyalties" within some branches of the Yemeni armed forces.?

"The protests were expected," said Abdulghani al-Iryani, a Yemeni political analyst. "But from the breaching of the embassy, it seems like someone has delved into muddy waters."

The bulk of the troops guarding the embassy appeared to belong to the Central Security Forces (CSF) a branch of the military led by former President Saleh?s nephew.

Many Yemenis were quick to note that anger at the United States government stems from far more than the film itself. Many here continue to complain of perceived American meddling in the country?s affairs, pointing to the United States? history of strong support for former president Saleh, who American officials once characterized as a key anti-terrorism ally.?

A botched drone strike south of Sanaa that accidentally struck a civilian vehicle, leaving at least 10 civilians dead, including three children, has also ratcheted up resentment.
??
?I condemn the attack,? said one secular Yemeni activist. ?But events like this are ultimately a result of America?s policies, which have negatively effected the Yemeni people.?

New iPhone with taller screen out next week

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Apple is holding an event in San Francisco during which it announced a new iPhone, capable of faster data speeds and sporting a taller screen. It also unveiled new iTunes software and new iPod devices.

The iPhone 5 will go on sale next week. It will work with fourth-generation, or 4G, cellular networks, something Samsung's Galaxy S III and many other iPhone rivals already do.

Apple Inc. is also updating its phone software and will ditch Google Inc.'s mapping service for its own. The two have become rivals as Google promotes phones running its Android operating system.

In anticipation, several gadget makers refreshed their lineups last week, hoping to beat Apple on the buzz. Nokia Corp. and Google Inc.'s Motorola Mobility division announced five new smartphones between them, while Amazon.com Inc. updated its Kindle Fire tablet computer and announced new stand-alone e-reader models.

Sales of Apple's iPhones are still strong, though the company lost the lead in smartphones to Samsung this year.

Samsung Electronics Co. benefited from having its S III out in the U.S. in June, while Apple was still selling an iPhone model it released last October. A new iPhone will allow Apple to recapture the attention and the revenue. Analysts are already estimating that Apple will sell 8 million to 10 million iPhone 5s before the company's quarter ends Sept. 30.

That said, the iPhone has been trailing Android phones in sales. On Tuesday, Google executive Hugo Barra declared on his Google Plus social networking page that 1.3 million Android phones are added each day, with 500 million devices activated globally. As of June, Apple has sold 244 million iPhones since the first one came out in 2007.

Apple's event Wednesday is taking place at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater, where Apple has held many product launches.

Here's a running account of the event, presented in reverse chronological order. All times are PDT. Appearances are made by CEO Tim Cook; Philip Schiller, the senior vice president for worldwide marketing; Scott Forstall, senior vice president for mobile software; Eddy Cue, senior vice president for Internet software and services; and others.

___

11:55 a.m.

Before closing the event, the Foo Fighters dedicates the song "My Hero" to Apple employees. Lead singer Dave Grohl gushes as he compares Apple executives to meeting leading rock stars such as Little Richard, Tom Petty and Jimmy Page.

The event ends with the song "Walk," after which the audience gives a standing ovation.

Apple's stock, which increased earlier during the event, were down $1.58, or a quarter of 1 percent, to $659.01 as the event concluded.

___

11:40 a.m.

The Grammy-winning band Foo Fighters appears on stage after Cook praised Apple's employees for "doing the best work of their lives, work that has real significance because developing revolutionary products makes a real difference in people's lives."

___

11:35 a.m.

Siri, the virtual assistant launched on the iPhone last year, is coming to the iPod Touch for the first time. Apple already has said Siri will appear on the iPad with the new software update.

Meanwhile, the iconic white earbuds are getting an update. Now called earpods, they sport an earpiece that is more cylinder. Apple says they were built to meld to the shape of your ear. The earpods go on sale Wednesday as a stand-alone accessory and will be included with new devices out in October.

___

11:30 a.m.

Apple is updating the iPod Touch ? essentially an iPhone without the ability to make calls. Like the new iPhone and the new iPod Nano, it will use the new connector, which Apple calls Lightning. It will have a 5-megapixel camera and the same panorama feature as the new iPhone. It will be possible to edit photos on the Touch for the first time.

___

11:20 a.m.

Although the new iPhone was the big announcement, Apple also unveiled a new version of its iTunes software for traditional computers.

There are new ways to create playlists and to decide what to listen to next. It also promises improved search ? as you type the name of an album, for instance, those in your music library will be suggested.

The iTunes software comes with a new mini player ? a small window from which you can play songs while you are still in your music library.

The new software will come out in late October.

Apple is also refreshing its iPod Nano. The seventh generation of the device is thinner than the previous one, with a bigger display. It now has a home button similar to that on the iPhone and the iPad. It also will come with Bluetooth wireless capability, allowing you to stream music.

___

11:05 a.m.

Prices will be the same as older models, starting at $199 with a two-year service contract. The iPhone 4S will now go for $99. The 2010 model, the iPhone 4, will now be free, though a service agreement is required.

Advance orders will start this Friday. It will start shipping on Sept. 21 in the U.S. and other countries, plus additional markets a week after that.

Older phones will get the iOS 6 upgrade for free next Wednesday. Apple has said it will be available for the 3GS, 4 and 4S models, though some new features won't work on them. It will also be available on last year's and this year's iPad models and newer iPod Touch devices.

Apple's stock is up $1.97, less than a third of 1 percent, to $662.56.

___

10:55 a.m.

Apple reminds the audience that the new phone is thinner and lighter than previous models.

Compared with the closest competitor, Samsung's Galaxy S III, the iPhone's screen is still smaller (the S III is 4.8 inches, compared with the iPhone 5's 4 inches). The iPhone 5 is lighter than the S III ? 122 grams (4.3 ounces) compared with 133 grams (4.7 ounces).

___

10:50 a.m.

The new phone software promises enhancement to email. You can deem certain people "VIPs" and flag emails from them so you can go back to them more easily.

Apple also demonstrated Passbook, a central place to keep your boarding passes, tickets and gift cards.

It's improving Siri, which is supposed to get better at fielding questions about movies, restaurants and other things. Apple is partnering with OpenTable Inc. to make reservations, for instance.

The new software also has a better tie-in with Facebook. You can talk to Siri to post a status update, for instance.

And Facetime video calls will work over cellular networks for the first time. It had been limited to Wi-Fi connections.

The new phone will come in black and white.

___

10:45 a.m.

As previously announced, Apple is releasing a new version of its phone software, iOS 6. It will have a new mapping software, as Apple ditches the one from Google it had been using. The new software will have turn-by-turn voice navigation ? a feature Google had limited to Android versions of its mapping app.

Apple says the phone's virtual assistant, Siri, will be giving the directions.

___

10:40 a.m.

The new iPhone has three microphones instead of two. They are located on the back, the front and the bottom. It also comes with a noise-cancelling earpiece for better sound.

One big change: The iPhone is getting a new connector to attach to computers and chargers. It had been using the same one from the iPod. Schiller says the old connector has "served us well for nearly a decade, but so much has changed."

That means the new iPhone won't be compatible with old accessories, though Schiller says accessory makers are already working to update their products. Apple will sell an adapter to work with older accessories.

___

10:35 a.m.

Schiller says the new phone will have a battery with eight hours of talk time and eight hours of Web browsing. It will have an 8-megapixel camera, with special features to eliminate noise in images and perform better in low light. There's also a feature that lets you stitch multiple images of a landscape for a panoramic view.

___

10:25 a.m.

As expected, the new phone will be capable of using the faster 4G cellular networks known as LTE. Sprint, Verizon and AT&T will support it in the U.S. Apple says the iPhone 5 will have faster Wi-Fi, along with a faster processing chip.

___

10:15 a.m.

The new phone is made entirely of glass and aluminum. Apple calls it its thinnest and lightest yet, at 7.6 millimeters (0.3 inch) thick and weighing 122 grams (4.3 ounces). It's 18 percent thinner than the iPhone 4S and 20 percent lighter. It also has a bigger screen, measuring 4 inches diagonally.

___

10:12 a.m.

Schiller introduces the iPhone 5.

___

10:10 a.m.

Cook gives an audience of journalists, analysts, bloggers and other guests a review of Apple's achievements.

He says the company now has 380 stores in 12 countries, with one opening in Sweden on Friday to make 13.

Cook recalls the summer launch of a new operating system for Mac computers, known as Mountain Lion. He says 7 million copies have been downloaded so far. He says Mac computers are selling well, as are Apple's iPad tablet computers ? 84 million so far.

He pokes fun at tablets from rival companies: "I don't know what these other tablets are doing," he says, suggesting they are probably being kept in drawers somewhere.

That remark drew laughter.

___

10 a.m.

Cook is on stage and showing an Apple store in Barcelona.

Apple details iPhone 5's new camera 8MP, 'same as iPhone 4S but thinner'

Apple's got a new camera in its brand new iPhone 5: 8-megapixels with a 3,264 x 2,448 backside-illuminated sensor, five-element lens, and f/2.4 aperture sits on the rear of the new device. "Same as the iPhone 4S, but thinner." 25 percent thinner in fact, to match the now slimmer iPhone. The branding remains the same -- it's still the iSight -- but a few new bells and whistles have been added alongside the thinning. A new dynamic low light mode, for one, and a fancy sapphire crystal cover. The phone's new A6 processor also helps out, offering a "smart filter" for better color matching, as well as speedier capture and still capture during video.

In terms of functionality, there's a new panorama mode, that allows picture stitching for multiple images into one larger shot (a whopping 28 megapixels in total) -- it looks like the 4S is getting this function as well, though it's unclear if it'll be via iOS 6 or what. Photo sharing is also getting expanded, adding more social functionality -- images can be shared with multiple friends or family members, and then those folks can comment.

But you only care about video, don't you? You'll be glad to hear that it's getting expanded as well. The rear camera still offers 30fps 1080p HD capture, albeit with better image stabilization. The front facing camera now features 720p video for all your extreme close-ups. Speaking of FaceTime, it will be available via LTE on the iPhone 5. But on all mobile networks? We're not so sure just yet.

Tomatometer Watch: Looper

Looper has been drawing early rave reviews, more than matching Brick's and far surpassing The Brothers Bloom. Here's what the critics are saying so far:

Brian Tallerico of HollywoodChicago.com: "It is personal, dark, daring, weird, and refreshingly unique. It is also one of the best sci-fi films of the last several years."

Amy Nicholson of Boxoffice Magazine: "The coolest, most-confident sci-fi flick since 2006's Children of Men."

Peter Debruge of Variety: "[Rian Johnson's] grandly conceived, impressively mounted third feature shows a giddy, geeky interest in science-fiction, then forces it into the back seat and lets the multidimensional characters drive."

Officer arriving to Sikh temple shooting: 'Time to use deadly force'

Oak Creek, Wis., police Chief John Edwards and Officer Sam Lenda narrate police video at a news conference that shows the final moments of the shooting that killed six worshippers at a Sikh temple.

By Kari Huus, NBC News

Police in Oak Creek, Wis.,?on Monday released chilling dash-cam video taken during the effort to apprehend shooter Wade Michael Page at a local Sikh Temple on Aug. 5, after a rampage that left six worshippers dead.

The video?and?radio messages show?that the police response was "textbook" quality, said Oak Creek police Chief John Edwards at a briefing where the videos were shown. The officers "took care of the situation very quickly, and ended it," Edwards said.

Page also died, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot after being hit by a police bullet.

The first video is taken from the squad car of Lt. Brian Murphy, who arrives two to three?minutes after the first 911 call, and comes across victims in the parking lot outside the temple. By radio, he calls in the victims and says he does not see a shooter. As he heads to his car for protective gear, the shooter emerges from the temple and begins firing at him, prompting Murphy to dive behind some parked cars.

On the video, the shooter,?identified as Page, begins moving one direction, and then reverses and circles around Murphy from behind.

"He moves with deliberateness" as he closes in on Murphy,?Edwards said.?"There?s no question in my mind that he intended to kill him."

The arrival of officer Sam Lenda minutes later, which is documented in a second dash-cam video, appears to distract the shooter, who begins walking toward Lenda?s squad car. Lenda said he saw the gunman reload or check his ammunition and then begin walking toward him.

Lenda takes?cover behind his?opened car door and begins shouting at Page to drop the gun. Page then begins?shooting at Lenda, hitting the headrest on the car's driver's side.

He was marching in an aggressive manner," while continuing to fire,?Lenda said at the briefing. After running through what he described as a "checklist" that was drilled in through years of training, Lenda returned fire.

"It was time to use deadly force," he said,?"which is what I proceeded to do at that time."

Ballistics showed that Lenda?s bullet hit Page, bringing him down, said Edwards. But ballistics also suggested that the deadly shot was self-inflicted ? a shot to the head that matched the 9 mm ammunition used by Page.

It was only after Page?was neutralized that Lenda and other officers could attend to?Murphy, who, it turned out had been shot more than a dozen times, according to Edwards.

Murphy was recently discharged from the hospital and is at home continuing his recovery.

"There?s no question in my mind that Lt. Murphy prevented the gunman from taking more lives," said Lenda.

Lenda agreed that his?own arrival likely saved Murphy?s life, but added, "I?m just an officer who did my job."

Some aspects of the shooting, including Page's?motive, remain under investigation.

Page?was a former member of the U.S. army with close ties to neo-Nazi and white supremacist groups, according to reports that emerged shortly after the shooting. One theory?is that the rampage was a hate crime aimed at Sikhs, a religion practices mainly by natives of India, or intended for Muslims, who are often confused with Sikhs.
