Honest! - Business Management Daily

Ignoring the IRS won?t make a tax audit go away, advised Sarah Plowman, senior policy analyst at the IRS. In fact, according to Plowman, the opposite is true?ignoring a notification of a payroll audit means that you give up your chance to tell your side of the story and set the record straight. Plowman calmed tax audit fears of attendees at the American Payroll Association?s Annual Congress, held in May.

Tax audit ABCs

The auditor will request an appointment and send you an information document request (IDR). Tip: If the IDR simply says ?Payroll Records,? call the number listed on the form and ask the auditor to be more specific.

Added benefit: You may be able to winnow down the number of documents the auditor wants to see.

Plowman said that payroll audits are usually conducted on the business premises. Auditors will be flexible and reasonable about postponing audits, but if you fail to cooperate, auditors will proceed by using any available information, she warned.

Auditors will interview responsible parties, so be sure to present an employee who knows how the business works. The worst thing you can do, Plowman stressed, is to waste the IRS? time.

More good advice: Don?t put auditors in an unventilated room or outside when it?s 100 degrees. It just makes them angry.

Tax audit dynamics

Payroll audits are generally limited to these four areas:

  • Worker classification
  • Fringe benefits
  • Officer compensation
  • Backup withholding.

Don?t let your pristine payroll records lull you into a false sense of security.

Plowman noted that auditors will pull corporate officers? 1040s and the company?s 1120s to determine officers? compensation. Auditors talk to other auditors, she said, so a payroll audit can quickly grow into an income tax audit.

Tax auditors also receive information from the U.S. Department of Labor regarding worker classification issues.

PAYROLL PRACTICE TIP: To stay out of the IRS? audit cross hairs, Plowman advised keeping good records and filing tax returns on time. Further, she emphasized that you should read IRS notices carefully and act on them promptly. What to avoid: Participating in abusive schemes, which the IRS jumps on, according to Plowman.

Oil falls amid concerns about global economy

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil prices fell for a second day Wednesday over concerns about economic turbulence in Europe, China and the U.S.

Benchmark oil was down 23 cents to $91.66 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract dropped 59 cents to end at $91.89 per barrel in New York on Tuesday.

Brent crude, which is used to price international varieties of oil, fell 47 cents to $111.10 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

Investors remain concerned about Europe's ongoing financial crisis after Spain's prime minister said a request for bailout funding isn't imminent.

Slower growth in China, which is a huge importer of oil, has also kept a lid on oil prices. Slower growth can cut demand for oil and other energy products.

Worries have also intensified that the U.S. economy will fall off a "fiscal cliff" at the end of the year. That's when tax increases and deep spending cuts will take effect unless Congress reaches a budget deal. A recession could follow.

"There is downside risk in the overall market," said Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney. "Oil is one of those commodities where I think demand is well-covered by current supply capacity."

In other Nymex energy futures trading:

? Natural gas fell 3.1 cents to $3.50 per 1,000 cubic feet. It ended at $3.531 Tuesday, a high for the year. The price is 85 percent above the low for the year of $1.91 reached in April.

? Heating oil was down 0.2 cent at $3.123 a gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline dropped 1 cent to $2.86 per gallon.

Hot Flashes in 11-Year-Old Linked to Herbal Medicine

An 11-year old girl in Italy experienced hot flashes after taking a commonly used herbal medicine, according to a new report.

The herb, called saw palmetto or Serenoa repens, is most commonly used to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate in adult men, but has also been used to treat baldness.

The girl had been taking daily doses of an oral supplement containing saw palmetto to treat a condition called telogen effluvium, a common cause of hair loss in children.

During the second month of treatment, the girl experienced hot flashes several times a day for many days, according to the researchers at the University of Messina in Italy who evaluated her case. Because of her symptoms, the girl stopped taking the supplement, and her hot flashes went away.

Shortly afterward, the girl had her first period. Her periods were abnormal, with heavy bleeding that lasted 15 days, the researchers said. These abnormal periods continued for about a year.

Saw palmetto is known to decrease estrogen levels in the body, and so a relationship between the herb?s use and hot flashes is plausible, the researchers said.

The supplement is generally thought to be safe, and when people do experience side effects, the symptoms are usually mild.

However, most studies on the herb's safety have been conducted in adult men, the researchers said. Little information exists concerning side effects in women or children.

The researchers said they can?t say for certain that the young girl's hot flashes were indeed caused by taking saw palmetto. However, she was not taking any other medications, did not have any known hormonal disorders, and her symptoms stopped when the supplement was discontinued ? all signs that point to the herb as the culprit, they said.

The researchers called for more research into the herb's effects on young people. Although generally used by adult men, saw palmetto is available in health food stores, the researchers said, so anyone can buy and use it.

The report is published today (Oct. 1) in the journal Pediatrics.

Pass it on: An herbal supplement may have caused hot flashes in a young girl in Italy.

Adele confirms she has recorded Bond theme tune

LONDON (AP) ? Adele has confirmed she has co-written and performed the theme to the upcoming James Bond movie "Skyfall."

The singer was initially unsure whether she wanted to take the project, according to news posted to the official James Bond website Monday.

"There's a lot of instant spotlight and pressure when it comes to a Bond song," she was quoted as saying. "But I fell in love with the script. ... It was also a lot of fun writing to a brief, something I've never done which made it exciting."

The song was written by Adele and Paul Hepworth, who co-wrote her hit "Rolling in the Deep." It was recorded at London's famed Abbey Road Studios.

Adele posted a picture on her Twitter feed Monday of what appears to be the sheet music cover page for the song, credited to Adele ? as A. Adkins ? and Hepworth. Rumors have swirled for months that the Grammy-winning British singer had recorded the theme, but there had been no official announcement from producers until Monday.

The song will be available on Adele's official site on Friday, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the release of "Dr. No," the first Bond movie. The track was available for pre-order at iTunes starting Monday.

The film, Daniel Craig's third Bond adventure, opens in Britain Oct. 26 and in the U.S. Nov. 9. The cast includes Javier Bardem, Albert Finney, Ralph Fiennes and Naomie Harris.

The theme to the last Bond film, "Quantum of Solace," was performed by Jack White and Alicia Keys.

Creative Writing Club at UHS

Ernest Hemmingway?s famous six word memoir ?for sale, baby shoes, never worn,? was one of many six word memoirs that made the members of Creative Writing Club (CWC) stop and think.
Although each member was moved by the amount of emotion and the simplicity inherent in the sentence, each member of CWC was affected in their own very different way by it.
However, the theme was pretty clear and easily agreed upon: Hemingway?s memoir speaks about the loss of a child.
CWC is a place for the students of Urbana High School to share their work and grow as writers. Each meeting is always exciting; you can never expect the same things to always happen.
CWC begins with students mingling and catching up, before everyone begins placing desks in a circle. This encourages involvement to the club and respect to those speaking. After a few short announcements, club sponsor Ms. Rachel Moyer begins the meeting with an introduction to a different style of writing, this week: 6 word memoirs/flash fiction.
Then, the members then take a few minutes to write something of their own and then share it. After each person finishes, the room goes around and gives creative and constructive criticism to the author.
By this time, most students will start leaving if they please, although most seemed to hover towards the front of the room and speak with Ms. Moyer; and sharing more of themselves with the members, who, to some, have become like a second family.
It is a friendly and caring environment.
?Everyone is heard,? says Ms. Moyer. ?[The members] are so receptive and encouraging.?
Freshman Vanessa Cano stated ?everyone is so deep, and everything is so well written that it is easy to compare your own experiences to the speaker.?
?It feels homey and safe, and easy to join at any time during the year.? says, club Vise President Sophomore Elizabeth Coffman-Mackey.
?Everyone is welcome and encouraged to share their work, and they?re never judged. I think that it?s the perfect place to create a style of writing for yourself, and to become comfortable in your type of writing.?
These activities, along with many others, are what you can expect at CWC meetings, every Thursday after school in room 2222.
