Around 50 Occupy protesters stormed a derelict court building in London today after driving there in a tank on a mission to bring 'those responsible' for the economic crisis to justice.

They have vowed to hold mock trials at Old Street Magistrates' Court for alleged corrupt politicians and greedy bankers using real solicitors before a retired judge.

The group also includes a new offshoot comprising ex-servicemen who call themselves 'Occupy veterans'.

The protesters have already unfurled a giant ?Occupy Everywhere? banner along the roof of the courthouse, although legal notices put on doors establishing their ?rights? as squatters had been ripped down by noon.

They scribbled the names of bankers and politicians on chalkboards outside the court's cells.

Occupy member Adam Fitzmaurice, a 28-year-old music industry management student, said: 'We are going to use the courthouse to put some people on trial.

'The government has failed to bring those responsible to justice, so we felt the people should do it instead. We?ve got a retired judge and real solicitors.'

But asked whether they expected their ?defendants? to attend, fellow Occupy protester Ronan McNern admitted: 'We might have to try them in absentia.'

He added: 'We are targeting the people we feel have been let off or not been brought to justice - it could be bankers, politicians or companies.

'These are not mock trials. These are trials with qualified solicitors. It?s not about staging anything. The accused will be invited to attend.'

Mr McNern denied the building was a glorified squat, saying: 'This building has been empty since 1996, which is a travesty given what is currently going on.

'This is about inviting the public in, just as we did with the ?bank of ideas? in the disused UBS building.'

A statement posted on the group?s website said: 'As Occupy London Stock Exchange occupation prepares to present its case at the High Court today, members of Occupy London have liberated a disused court house - Old Street Magistrates' Court - in London?s East End alongside a group of military veterans, Occupy Veterans.?

'The opening of Occupy London?s fourth occupation, will see the movement conducting ?trials of the one per cent? in the abandoned magistrates' court building which has lain empty since 1996 despite its prime location and Grade II listing.'?

A Met Police spokesperson said: 'Officers were called to a disused building on Old Street this morning following a report of squatters in place.

'Officers from Hackney attended the scene. No arrests have been made.'

The results of a poll published today shows that nearly two-thirds of Christians surveyed (63 per cent) thought the Church of England should do more to speak out against the financial sector.

This compared to just one in five (22 per cent) respondents who disagreed.

Peter Kerridge, CEO of Premier Christian Media Trust, which commissioned the survey, said: 'The Church of England found themselves in a difficult position when taken by surprise by the protesters encampment.

'However the Bishop of London?s intervention did make a positive difference to what could have become a truly disastrous situation.

'The results clearly show that Christians believe the Church could have responded better to the protesters as well as doing more to combat corruption within some parts of the financial sector.

'Even David Cameron, recently acknowledged that the absence of a Christian moral code allowed some bankers and politicians to behave immorally to the detriment of British society.

'The Prime Minister?s speech has now given the Church of England the perfect opportunity to take a stand against this corruption on behalf of the Christian community and beyond.'

Political Notes: Hotels for Heroes helps military get a place to stay

EDITOR'S NOTE: Political Notes is a weekly compilation of political news items.

Military members will be able to stay in hotels for free as part of a new Hotels for Heroes program.

Congress passed a law last week, co-sponsored by Maryland Democrats U.S. Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger and Sen. Ben Cardin, that allows people to donate hotel reward points to members of the military. The bill, which will benefit troops receiving care through the military health system and their families, was included in the National Defense Authorization Act that passed by a vote of 283 - 136 in the House and 86-13 in the Senate.

"The love and support of family is often the best medicine to help a wounded warrior recover from his or her injuries," Ruppersberger said in a statement. "Military families are already facing enormous challenges and should not ever have to worry about how they will afford travel expenses."

Hotels for Heroes is an expansion of the national Hero Miles program that provides free round-trip airfare to wounded warriors recovering at military medical centers, as well as to friends and family visiting them. Flights under the program, created by Ruppersberger in 2003, are made possible through frequent flyer mile donations made by airline passengers.

The program is administered by the Fisher House, a nonprofit organization that opens its homes to military families visiting loved ones at hospitals across the country. Fisher House recently announced it had issued 25,000 tickets over the years.

Bongino endorsement

A Severna Park man running for U.S. Senate has garnered another local endorsement.

Sen. Ed Reilly, R-Crofton, has endorsed former U.S. Secret Service agent Dan Bongino.

Reilly, the state Senate's minority whip, said Bongino can relate to the "average Marylander."

"Dan understands the difficult choices we face in this weak economy," Reilly said in a statement. "His candidacy gives us a chance to turn the page and send someone to Washington who has actually lived a life similar to those he'd be elected to represent."

Bongino, 36, served in the Secret Service for more than a decade in the Presidential Protection Division. An entrepreneur, Bongino has graduate degrees in business administration and psychology.

Merck gets approval for wider use of HIV drug (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? U.S. health regulators have approved an expanded label for Merck & Co's treatment for HIV for use with other antiretroviral drugs in children and adolescents.

The safety and effectiveness of the drug was evaluated in a clinical trial of 96 children and adolescents of ages 2-18 years with HIV-1 infection, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in a statement.

The drug, Isentress, was first approved for use in adult patients in October 2007.

Jump in housing starts points to recovery (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Housing starts and building permits jumped to a 1-1/2 year high in November as demand for rental apartments rose, suggesting the housing market was entering a tentative recovery.

Tuesday's data, which also showed gains in groundbreaking for single-family homes, was the latest sign of a quickening of an economic recovery that still faces risks both at home and abroad.

"Investors should take heart that if Europe doesn't melt down and Congress figures out how to extend the payroll tax cut, the economy can continue to gain momentum," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors in Holland, Pennsylvania.

Housing starts surged 9.3 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 685,000 units, the highest level since April last year, the Commerce Department said. Economists had forecast a 635,000-unit rate.

New permits for future construction increased 5.7 percent to a 681,000-unit pace in November, the highest since March 2010. That was also above expectations.

Stocks on Wall Street climbed sharply on the housing data and a drop in Spain's borrowing costs, with major indexes up more than 2.5 percent in late trade.

U.S. Treasury debt prices fell as investors' risk appetite increased, while the dollar was weak across the board.

The data boosted shares of U.S. homebuilders, including KB Home, Pulte Group Inc and Lennar, which rose more sharply than the broader market.

The U.S. economy is showing resilience even as much of the rest of the world is slowing down, with a festering debt crisis expected to push the euro zone into recession.

There was some positive news for embattled Europe on Tuesday as data showed German business sentiment rose for a second straight month in December.

Apart from the euro zone crisis, the U.S. economy also faces a threat from tighter fiscal policy as lawmakers bicker over the extension of a payroll tax cut that expires at the end of the month.

The Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday rejected a bill passed by the Senate at the weekend to extend the tax cut by another two months, increasing the risk it would expire.

HOUSING ON CUSP OF RECOVERY

Falling house prices and tight lending standards have pushed Americans away from homeownership, lifting demand for rental units and boosting construction of multifamily homes in the process.

The rental vacancy rate dropped to 9.8 percent in the third quarter from a peak of 11.1 percent in 2009. While the home ownership rate edged up in the quarter, it was coming off a 13-year low.

The increase in home building last month raised optimism that the sector, which has already become less of a drag on the economy, will add to U.S. gross domestic product next year.

If so, it would be the first increase since 2005, before the housing bubble burst.

Residential construction, however, accounts for only about 2.5 percent of GDP, so any lift is likely to be small. But economists estimate that an additional 100,000 housing starts would add about 250,000 new jobs.

Home building has grown for two straight quarters. A report on Monday showed builder optimism scaled a 1-1/2 year high in December, and data later this week is expected to show increases in sales of both previously owned and new homes.

But a full recovery for the sector, which triggered the 2007-09 recession, is likely years away given a glut of unsold homes, weak prices, high unemployment and tight credit. Housing starts remain less than a third of the 2.27 million rate peak reached in January 2006.

"It will still take two to three years to work off the excess inventory and housing prices will remain under pressure through the first half of 2012," said Eric Green, chief U.S. economist at TD Securities in New York.

"However, residential activity is now in an upswing (and) will contribute modestly to GDP growth in 2012," he said. "While this will not drive the recovery, every little bit helps when growth is trending around 2 percent."

Last month, starts of multi-family homes surged 25.3 percent to a 238,000-unit rate, and groundbreaking for projects with five or more units hit the highest level since September 2008.

Single-family home construction -- which accounts for a much larger portion of the market -- rose 2.3 percent to a 447,000-unit pace.

Permits were boosted by a 13.9 percent jump in the multi-family segment. Permits for buildings with five or more units were the highest since October 2008. Permits to build single-family homes rose just 1.6 percent.
