It was a slow start but a powerful finish for Columbus East Tuesday night.

With senior hitters Sara Bean and Micayla Speidel pounding away, the Class 4A No. 3 Olympians ended their regional match with a nine-point flurry to cap off a 25-19, 25-20, 25-13 victory against? Center Grove.

?We started off a little shaky,? Bean said. ?I don?t think we played as well as we did on Saturday against Shelbyville (in the sectional finals). But as the match went on, we brought the intensity to a higher level, and we finished strong tonight.?

East (31-4) advances to Saturday?s Seymour Semistate, where it will play No. 4 Avon in the semifinals around 12:30?p.m. No. 9 Seymour and No. 10 Cathedral will meet in the first semifinal at 11?a.m., and the championship match will be at 7?p.m.

Assassin's Creed III lead designer talks about ?King Washington? DLC

During the first days of October Ubisoft unveiled the first batch of DLCs for Assassin?s Creed III, the first numbered entry in the Ubisoft series since 2009.
Alongside Season Pass and extra multiplayer content, the ?Tyranny Of King Washington? DLC was also unveiled: it?s a ?what if? scenario where players will attempt to kill George Washington in an alternative post Revolution scenario, where the first president of the United States rises to power as a tyrannical ruler.
Ubisoft has always played with history with the series, always trying to keep everything relatively realistic: this time the developers wanted to really branch out and attempt something entirely different.
Steve Masters, the game lead designer, explained to Official XBox Magazine the reasons behind this choice: developers didn?t want to fragment the fanbase by having relevant characters and events included in optional content, like in the previous entries, making it harder for all players to follow the plot in its entirety.
It?s also a way for the team to try something less serious and by using an alternative history scenario they had all the freedom they wanted to go around with things in a more whimsical way.

The ?Tyranny Of King Washington? tale will unfold over the course of three single player episodes to create an all new single player campaign completely detached from the main game. Gamers can buy the DLC as a standalone or together with the Season Pass, which will grant access to all DLC released for the game

The game launches next week, with the release?set for October 30 on PS3 and Xbox 360. A PC release will come on November 23. A Wii U?version will be available ?next month. As previously reported, the first ingame minutes can be watched here

Singer Brandy is back with new album after years of struggle

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In the spirited video of "Put it Down," the lead single from Brandy's new album "Two Eleven," she struts and dances, seductively inviting potential suitors to "Play your cards right, maybe we can fall in love."

But it wasn't so long ago that professional and personal setbacks caused the 33-year-old R&B singer and actress to lose confidence and seriously question her future in music.

The well-received album, which in its first week hit the No. 2 spot on iTunes, has the former teen idol poised for a return to the top.

Billboard magazine declared "Two Eleven" "Brandy's most focused album since 1998's 'Never Say Never,'" her breakout and best-selling album, while The Washington Post praised it as "a testament to the fact that despite whatever trends are happening in popular music right now, a good voice always shines through."

And while many artists bristle at the term "comeback," Brandy is happy to have it applied to "Two Eleven."

"I am definitely calling it a comeback," she told Reuters in an interview. "I know for a fact that I've been gone for a while and I couldn't find my way. I couldn't get it together."

The album title has a great deal of significance for Brandy. Not only is it her birthday, February 11, it is also the day her friend, mentor and musical idol, Whitney Houston, died earlier this year.

"It was a tough decision," she said of the title choice.

"I didn't want people to think - you know, negative people - that you're trying to use the passing of Whitney Houston to sell records, and that's not the case.

"I need for everybody to know that if it wasn't for Whitney Houston, there would be no me," she continued. "Because she was the possibility for me. She was the vision of my dreams actually coming true and she meant everything to me."

CAR WRECK A LOW POINT

Despite being relatively absent from the recording studio, Brandy hasn't been out of the spotlight in recent years.

In 2010, she competed on the hit television show "Dancing With the Stars" and starred in the VH1 reality series "Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business," but behind the scenes, she was struggling.

Six years ago the singer was involved in a multi-car crash on the Freeway in Los Angeles in which one of the drivers was killed. Brandy said that was a low point and caused her to lose her bearings for awhile.

"Everybody knew about the terrible accident that I went through and everybody else involved in that," she said.

"I didn't know what was going on. I'm a good person, so I'm like, 'Why is all of this stuff ... what's going on? This is a whirlwind,' you know? And then I don't have a connection with my music. It was like a storm."

Two years later, she released her fifth album, "Human," but sales were disappointing and she and Epic Records parted ways.

"I didn't know if I was going ever get the chance to share my music the way I had shared it before - with a team behind me, a major label push and a direction," Brandy said. "I stopped believing in myself. I thought it was over."

She credits her 10-year-old daughter with providing her inspiration.

"I felt like I wasn't being a good example to my daughter. I wanted to make her proud," she reflected.

"Two Eleven" is the result of a new deal with RCA and the singer's collaborations with a dream team of writers and producers including Frank Ocean, Sean Garrett and Bangladesh.

"For my fans to really embrace my new album and to give it a chance ... it's such a blessing," she said.

Now Brandy is in a good place both artistically and personally. She has found happiness with her boyfriend of two years, music producer Ryan Press, and says she has also managed to satisfy her toughest critic -- herself.

"I felt like I had something to prove to myself," she said about going back into the studio, but once she was back in her groove, it became clear.

"I was like, 'OK. I can do this again. This is what I'm supposed to do.'"

Garry Marshall & James Bond ? Screenwriting from Iowa

It?s mash-up Monday here at?Screenwriting from Iowa?and Other Unlikely Places.

Maybe it?s just a coincidence, but the past four weeks have been the highest weeks of views I?ve ever had on this blog. And most of the posts in the past four weeks have been insights from producer/writer/director Garry Marshall. So I?ll continue that trend for a few more days so we can have ?A Month of Marshall. Something I?ve never done for any single person since starting this blog almost five years ago. (Though part of the spike in views is also due to the popularity of the post Screenwriting the Pixar Way-Part 2.)

Today we?ll look at Gary Marshall the actor and make some odd connections. Hence, the mash-up.

On Friday, my former intern Josh McCabe?& I spoke at the Fast Forward Conference at the University of Northern Iowa. Our talk was called ?Going from Student to Working Professional? and they actually didn?t have room in their large studio for all the students who wanted to attend. Back on January 31, 2011 I wrote a post called How to Get Started Working in Production, and talked about Josh?s working for me before moving to LA.

Since then he?s worked for a variety of clients and brands including TBWA/Chiat/Day, Smashbox, Discovery, Gatorade, Lexus, and Estee Lauder. He?s keeping busy mostly editing these days. In the odd connection category he told me that he actually was in a film with Garry Marshall. The short film was produced and directed by Melissa Joan Hart. You can watch the film Mute on this link.

So forget that six degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon. I?m only one degree from Garry Marshall. And I even have much older friendship with writer/actress Clare Sera?who had roles in both The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2 which Garry Marshall directed.

Back in the 80s Garry also had an office on Riverside Drive in Burbank. Back in the 80s I lived on Riverside Drive in Burbank. If I recall correctly my apartment was at 1200 Riverside Dr. at a place called the Equestrian Inn. It?s a swankier place now, but back when I was in college it was very un-L.A. in that there were horse stables next to the apartment?s parking lot and I frequently woke up to the distinct sound of the mating call of a peacock. (And the peacock had nothing to do with the nearby NBC studios where Johnny Carson taped The Tonight Show.)

I met the woman who would become my wife at those apartments. We still laugh about that peacock noise. And I can do a pretty good imitation on request. ?No, it?s not what attracted her to me. But that peacock sound ?is an objective correlative in our relationship. We met in an elevator in Burbank?can you get any more romantic than that?

We?ll get back to more Garry Marshall?s insights tomorrow, but allow me to reminisce a bit. Over the weekend I went to see Argo and loved the film, which also takes places in the 80s and takes places partly in Burbank?in fact, just off Riverside Dr. at The Burbank Studios. (But as far as I know, neither Garry Marshall?nor Johnny Carson? had anything to do with Argo.) We?ll talk more about Ben Affleck?s five-year journey to bring Chris Terrio?s script to movie theaters next week.

Next week we?ll also talk about filming in Turkey. The last two films I?ve seen (Argo & Taken 2) both were partly filmed in Istanbul, Turkey. My wife?the one I met in the elevator?in Burbank?was actually in Istanbul, Turkey last week and brought me some literature from the area about how they are actively seeking to make more movies in Turkey. Next month is the release of the new James Bond film Skyfall which was shot Istanbul.

I?d say Istanbul has recently done a super job of attracting some major films. It doesn?t take much from a place to go from an unlikely place to make a film, to a highly popular place to make a film. (And a shout-out to Orkide Unsur, a filmmaker in Istanbul who reads this blog.)

No news if Garry Marshall has any plans to shoot a film in Istanbul. And as far as I know he?s never acted in a James Bond film. But how about this for a wrap-up?the first James Bond film was Dr. No released in 1962, Garry Marshall?s first credit as an actor was in The Phoney America?released in 1961. I think that?s why these posts about Garry are so popular. He?s a producer, director, writer, actor who has had not only his share of hit films (Pretty Woman) ?and TV shows (Happy Days)?but he?s able to drawn on insights from doing this for six decades.

P.S. How successful was Garry Marshall?s TV career at its peak? Well back in 1979?when the Iranian hostage crisis (depicted in Argo) started?according to The Museum of Broadcast Communications, ?four of the five highest-rated shows of the year were Marshall?s.?

P.P.S. That speaking gig Friday was a blast, and while not something I?ve actively pursued, I enjoy those opportunities. If any colleges or groups would like to bring me in to speak?with or without Josh?shoot me an email at info@scottwsmith.com.

Apple's Oct. 23 'iPad Mini' event: What to expect

8 hrs.

The rumors surrounding Apple's press event, scheduled for Oct. 23, are deafening. Will the Cupertino-based company announce a smaller iPad? (It had better.) Will the company offer up a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina display? (Very likely!)?How about an?Apple-branded coffee maker? (No.)

We'll find out for certain which rumors are true?at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET on Tuesday,?when NBC News' tech/sci editor?Wilson Rothman will be inside the event, covering it live here (and tweeting at @wjrothman).?For now, let's?sort?through the latest gossip and making our best guesses. Here's what Apple might announce:

iPad Mini (or is that "iPad Air"?)
We suspect that the smaller iPad will be a 7.85-inch device. This particular size has been floating around for over half a year, since a report in the Wall Street Journal suggested that Apple is testing a device about eight inches in size. Since that time, we've heard various other outlets cite their own anonymous sources in order to back up these measurements and narrow them down to the?7.85-inch point.

Odds are high that the smaller iPad will not have a high-resolution Retina display like the iPhone 5 or the third-generation iPad. A Bloomberg?report suggests?it will use a slightly lower resolution display and be priced to compete with Google's Nexus 7 tablet (and other lower-cost tablets such as those made by Amazon or Barnes & Noble).

According to Apple watcher John Gruber, the smaller iPad may look a lot like a large iPod Touch, rather than any other current Apple device, and have a somewhat smaller bezel. Simple logic suggests that the device will have a Lightning connector, just like the iPhone 5 and the latest iPod touch devices. Rumors regarding the guts of the so-called "iPad Mini"???or "iPad Air,"?as some rumors suggest it will be called???have been scattered and leave us hesitant to hazard many guesses about that aspect of the device.?(Most of the noise is around an A5 processor and 512MB of RAM, for what it's worth ? about the same specs as an iPad 2.)

As far as the price goes though, it's all about educated guesswork.?As our own Wilson Rothman pointed out, $249 would be the magic price tag for this tablet.?"I think that $249 is the 'all other tablets are dead' price, and $299 is the 'Apple keeps its market share?while making a comfortable profit' price. Anywhere over $300 is a "not good" price," Rothman concludes. "Not in today's market, not with a full-sized iPad 2 selling for $400 and a Retina-display iPad selling for $500."

That pricing logic may not win out, however. As 9to5Mac reported, Apple's smaller iPad may be priced at $329, in order to sit somewhere between the $299 iPod Touch and the $399 iPad 2.

13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display
According to multiple reports, both from?purportedly?"reliable sources" cited by 9to5 Mac's Mark Gurman and analysts cited by CNET's Brooke Crothers,?Apple will show off a 13-inch version of the MacBook Pro with Retina display.?This laptop will supposedly be "sold in two configurations, with differing processors and storage, and will be available for purchase soon after introduction," Gurman explains.

A report by the 9to5 Mac staff additionally suggests that the new laptops will start at around $1699. This price tag would belong to the base-model, according to the report, and a higher end version of the laptop would cost about $200 or $300 more.

This new laptop is expected to co-exist with its larger siblings, so don't worry that the current MacBook Pro with Retina display models will disappear from shelves.

A new?new?iPad
The folks at 9to5 Mac call attention to a photo allegedly showing a device which appears identical to the third-generation iPad, except for one small change: It has a Lightning connector instead of a 30-pin connector. One could speculate that the device will see a minor refresh, though it's questionable what sort of other changes might be made, beyond the connector.

Would Apple be crazy enough to refresh the third-generation iPad after just seven months? It would be unprecedented, but not totally outside the realm of possibility.

The other little things
It wouldn't be surprising if Apple were to announce some minor refreshes to its iMac and Mac Mini lines.?According to MacRumor's handy-dandy buyer's guide, both of the product lines are certainly due for some changes.?While the New York Times' David Pogue, citing an Apple exec, did peg a Mac Pro refresh for 2013, there seems to be wiggle room on the?arrival date of a new iMac.

As a French Apple blogger discovered, there's also?a chance that we'll also see some news related to ibooks, Apple's ebook software. After all, there appear to be apps referencing iBooks 3.0 already.

Oh, and let's not forget about the obligatory iTunes update. What would an Apple event be without one of those?

Expert Ideas In Internet Marketing You Can Use Now! | Eric Chua ...

You can enjoy nearly unlimited success when you apply effective Online marketing principles. More than ever before, you can find new business and build strong relationships with them. You can learn ways to make use of this marketing technique by reading this article.

When you see a domain name that you want, be prepared and have money available to purchase it. You may not be able to get the exact domain name you were hoping for. By spending upwards of $2,000, chances are good that you can obtain one that is extremely similar.

Use Facebook, Twitter and other social media websites to your advantage. News media, such as social websites, allow you to keep up-to-date and in constant communication with all your site?s visitors, and simple and quick when trying to keep them informed about any promotions. However, beware of being overly promotional in your comments and tweets. Rather, provide posts that are informative and witty, with a little bit of sales lingo scattered here and there.

TIP! Current content is very important on your website. If a site visitor sees outdated content, they might think you are doing badly and will not stay long on your site.

Talk with other businesses and retailers online to create bundle deals of services and products that you could sell for less in volume. This method allows you to link several markets, which will generate more sales for you. This strategy is proven effective by the ways that online booking agents bundle vacation packages. This idea is perfect for any company that has linked products that complement each other, but are not seen as competitors.

Offering incentives and discounts can encourage your customers to order from you again. This could include things like free gift wrapping, free shipping or quicker delivery. You may want to offer free shipping to the first hundred people purchasing a new product. This induces people to make a purchase quickly because of a perceived discount.

TIP! Try to understand your competitors. You may easily look at the competition?s web site to see the features they might have.

You can use online tools to determine the efficiency of your marketing approach; one option is to calculate the percentage of site visitors who ultimately end up making a purchase. Most major companies online offer various add-ons and trackers, which allow you to see the comparison of visitors to sales numbers and repeat customers.

You should ensure that your business website?s URL is a simple one. If possible, use the name of your business or brand as your website name. Although Google is simple to use, it is another step that a customer has to take if they cannot remember your web address. So make it something simple that will automatically stick in their minds.

To increase the quality of your website marketing, start blogging. If you blog regularly, you are giving yourself another forum through which you can inform consumers. Blogging adds more content to your website, which can give you a larger presence on the internet. This frequently translates into more traffic to your site.

TIP! Have a comment form available to consumers who choose not to purchase. They may offer helpful information you can use to increase sales.

Become an expert in whatever is on your site. This is vital because you will have a good reputation for being an expert, if you are not truthful people will not come back!

If you want to be successful at Website marketing, you must have a very clear understanding of your competition. If you know your competitors, you can discover and make use of weaknesses and strengths that can make you a lot of money. This is essential for any marketing campaign.

You need to remember that you will need to use some of your profits from Web marketing to do more marketing. If you can make a cycle that includes customers and a search they often use, they can locate your business and purchase your products.

TIP! A CMR (customer relationship management) list is a great Internet marketing tool. Use it to identify past and present customers and their respective purchase history.

Pay attention to the small details on your site. The title of your site should be at the top right corner of every page along with a brief description of the site. Visitors will land on different pages depending on the searches that they perform, and if they can?t figure out what you?re site is about, they are likely to leave immediately.

One element of your Website marketing plan should be to create a page for your website dedicated to public relations matters. You can include content with articles that could be used for magazines, newspapers and online. This will help you show off any positive reviews you have received, which will increase your credibility.

Offer a money back guarantee to your customers when you market your business online. Customers need to know you will make an effort to to accept responsibility for your products or services that don?t work out for them. Money back offers are an old, but effective, way to build trust, brand loyalty and increase sales.

TIP! If a customer buys something, try showing them some similar items that they may also be interested in. As an example, if a customer bought your ebook on how to knit, send them a link to the more advanced products you offer on knitting.

Let your users post reviews. This kind of feedback from users is an effective way to show visitors the benefits and uses for your product. Be sure to monitor the page so the best reviews and comments are highlighted.

You?ve already seen the great number of people that Website marketing has been able to reach. You can also use it keep in touch with existing customers. This customer and business interaction has never before been possible, but is now with the power of the Internet. Use the helpful methods in the article above to get the most out of what the Internet has to offer your business.
