Florence ? Get ready for a new era of boom times in men's fashion. A whole slew of high level brands are now investing huge sums in menswear; a major league bet based on the belief that a generation of millions of men in Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) markets are about to spend large sums on building proper gentlemanly wardrobes.
The signs are abundantly clear - LVMH, the world's biggest luxury conglomerate - will launch the tony shoemaker Berluti as a fully fledged men's brand in 10 days time in Paris; while its biggest rival PPR completed the acquisition of famed Italian tailor Brioni this week, ushering in a new era this weekend in the Milan menswear runway season.
But on Wednesday, Jan. 11, in Florence, all eyes were on the house of Valentino, which staged its first men's show in a half decade - what turned out to be a hyper sophisticated display of voluminous tailoring, edgy juxtaposition and brilliant use of bonded materials.
The show, staged in the faded glory of the beautiful Palazzo Corsini, whose Renaissance frescos have a ghostly charm due to being washed out by the 1966 flood of the Arno, making it an ideally opulent setting for this print free collection. Before a giant LED screen and audience dotted with scores of Tuscan nobility, Valentino's designers Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri sent out a gutsy collection - with subtly voluminous silhouette used in a garments that combined athletic sportswear elements with haute gamme tailoring.
The show opened with a half dozen curvy-shouldered coats in the duo's signature masculine obsession of mixing fabrics - most notably felt wool torsos with lambskin sleeves. These were all paired with slim fitted pants with darts, exactly the sort that Roman-born Piccioli himself wears.
But the standouts included mini cabans in combinations of knit cashmere fronts with felted cashmere shoulders and arms, or a sensational spy trench coat in deerskin bonded over denim. A palette of ink, deep sea blue and anthracite suggested a moody midnight in Rome, the brand's hometown. Above all, there was a great sense of designer's targeting a modern consumer keen for classy sophistication but also open to path breaking silhouettes and tailoring.
Not all the accessories worked and there were a tad too many micro suits in moss green, lending a minimalist leprechaun air to the show. But, over all, this was a smart meeting of Italian savoir faire and intelligently experimental design.
"Modern sophistication," commented Piccioli taking his bow in a palace on the other side of the Arno from where Valentino staged his very first runway show almost exactly a half-century ago.

Fling Joysticks for iPad.
By Suzanne Choney
Yes, the iPad has over 140,000 apps. But did you know you can put it on a leash? Put it on your leg? Wear it like a purse? Give it balls (to protect it from short drops)? Attach a bicycle-like horn as a speaker?
These and other crazy-but-useful iPad accessories were shown at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas:
A leg up
Sometimes you might find yourself out and about with your iPad, and even though you have a case for for it, you have no way to hold it ? your arms are full of other goodies or a baby or a small doggie whose canine Martha Stewart tote bag you left at home.

Suzanne Choney / msnbc.com
Enter the Grip Pad, a non-slip pad that you attach to the back of the iPad, then attach just about anywhere on you. Its most-likely use is for slouchy couch potatoes, splayed out on the sofa with iPad propped on bent knees ? using Grip Pad, you don't need a case or anything else to prop the iPad once the non-gummy Grip Pad is put on the back of the iPad.
Wrapsol, maker of the Grip Pad, says it works because it's made from a "non-slip tactilla material," one the company has patented. The Grip Pad's measurements are 8.25 inches by 3.75 inches. It costs $14.95, and is available at Staples. There's also a medium-size version ($9.95) for smaller-size tablets like the Kindle.

Suzanne Choney / msnbc.com
Leash me in
Here's another out-and-about scenario, or one where you may not want to schlep a case, but you do want to have your iPad with you: Put it on a leash like the iCat holder, made by EK USA Ekcessories, which produces industrial-strength goodies.
This cat has two hooks at the end of the leash that lock into the iPad's USB port, and I know what you're thinking because I was thinking the same thing when I saw it: How is that going to work without ripping up my USB port and/or the iPad dropping like a stone? It didn't.
The leash holds up to 43 pounds ? more than enough for iPad 2's 1.35 pounds (for the Wi-Fi plus 3G model) or the original iPad's 1.6 pounds for the same model.
It costs $24.99 and is available from Amazon, as well as EK USA Ekcessories. You can use it, of course, with your iPhone or iPod Touch, and there are other similar models available that give you the option of putting your device on a retractable reel (iCat Reel It) or the iCat Hang It (a shorter leash), both of which clip to a belt loop.

The iPad purse (and stand)
You can carry your iPad like a Hermes purse, and look even chicer; this one comes in eight colors, and the purse option is just one use for it.?
Made for iPad 2, the tablet just clips into place into the holder's rubber rings.
But wait, there's more: The OmniStand, one of several made by Kiolink, can also be used as a stand in portrait or landscape mode by moving the handle around.
Colors are: Orange, green, light blue, pink, red, black, gray and navy blue.
It's $60, and will be available in April from the Skymall catalog, or visit Kiolink's website.

An iPad with protective balls
This shock-absorbing harness for the iPad is the perfect add-on for when the tablet is in little ones' hands, where it stands good odds of being dropped (although if you have a sibling or spouse who you don't trust with your iPad, this isn't a bad idea for them, either.)
It can safely?be dropped from 6 feet?? although it's not meant to survive a 100,000-feet plunge or thrown against a wall like some protective covers.
Four shock-absorbing balls, made from EVA foam rubber, the same material used in flip-flops, fit over the corners of the iPad and are held in place by an adjustable elastic cord. If the iPad is dropped ? and the "if" is really "when" ? the tablet itself never touches the floor or any sticky surfaces or spills.
iBallz founders and friends Derek Michael and Lee Doerr came up with the idea. Both loved their iPhones and were excited when they heard about the iPad coming out in 2010.? Both had dropped and broken their phones, and the cracks were in the corners of the screen, "and I thought if I can break this small thing, what am I going to do with this big thing?" said Doerr. Thus was born the idea for iBallz, which adds just 3 grams of weight to the iPad.
Available at Amazon or from iBallz itself, iBallz comes in grey, black, pink or turquoise, and costs $19.95. There are separate versions for the iPad and iPad 2; as well as iBallz "minis" for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Kindle Fire and other tablets.
Fling it!
No, don't fling the iPad, but if you like playing games on it and are missing the console experience, Ten One Design's beautifully designed Fling Joystick for iPad provides auto-centering and force feedback.

Suzanne Choney / msnbc.com
The Fling for iPad, made of smooth, anodized aluminum and a tough, clear and flexible engineering-grade resin. won an Innovations Design and Engineering Award at this year's CES.
Ten One Design says it designs "each product from the ground up. Usually it starts with sketches on paper (seriously, paper)."
The Fling for iPad costs $19.95 for one Fling, or $29.95 for a two-pack. It comes in Ice, Ninja and Ultraviolet colors. (There's also a Fling Mini for iPhone, iPod Touch, or Android devices ? $24.95 for a two-pack). Flings can be ordered from Ten One Design.
The Horn Stand

Suzanne Choney / msnbc.com
?Maybe you want a break for your earphones, but don't want to blast your music using more powerful speakers. Enter The Horn Stand for iPad 2, which gives your tablet an old-timey, bicycle kind of horn that just snaps onto the iPad and ups its sound by 16 decibels.
The Horn Stand, made from silicon, also doubles as a stand for the iPad, both horizontally and vertically.
It costs $30, and is available at Best Buy. It's made by Fruitshop, and doesn't require any additional power to run. It comes in pink, gray and black; there are also Horn Stands for iPhone and iPod Touch.
iOstand

Suzanne Choney / msnbc.com
Does this remind you of an old beloved friend (hint: the iMac G4 from 2002), especially with a white iPad in horizontal mode as shown here? From iOmounts, its iOstand uses a patent-pending, ferro-magenetic sphere and magnetic carrier to let you latch and slide your iPad onto it, then swivel the tablet around as you need to. When the stand and the tablet are combined, they do look a little like a sleeker iMac G4, but in tablet size.
Tamas Kovacs, co-inventor of the iOmounts system, says he thinks the iOstand has the potential to become the "standard? for mounting electronic devices in hotel rooms, airports, lounges, classrooms, training facilities, hospitals and conference rooms ? any place where visibility, ease-of-use and convenience are consideration."
The iOstand comes in stainless steel ($109), as well as in a White Powdercoat and Black Powdercoat version (each $89).
It can work with other tablets, and there's a smaller model? the iOmini ? for the iPhone and other smartphones, as well as for handheld game consoles. The stands are available from iOmounts.
Beanpad Portfolio
??

Wilson Rothman / msnbc.com
Beanpad Porfolio by Vantage Point
Your iPad need never touch a surface using the Beanpad Porfolio ($79).
Vantage Point's previous Beanpads have been good for curling up on the couch or using from bed, or even in a car. The beanbag sits well on most surfaces, and its vibration-dampening effect makes it especially nice while on the road with one. You can go horizontal or vertical with orientation.
But unlike the previous Beanpads, the Portfolio model needs no mount. Instead it has a leather case with Velcro backing, so you're getting both the bean bag and a case that can be used separately, so it's a true two-fer.
Beanpad Portfolio is available at some electronics stores, including Fry's, and from Vantage Point.

Suzanne Choney / msnbc.com
Tablet Teddy Bear
We saved the cutest for last: Tablet Teddy Bear($60) lets your child use the bear's tummy and paws (which have anti-skid material) to hold the iPad in place. On the back of the bear is a removable backpack for storing the tablet, and there's a carry handle for the backpack.
The bear come in blue, pink and brown.
Creator Dean Theodore, a pediatric occupational therapist, has similar soft and cuddly options ? dog, cat and monkey Tablet Pet Pals ($50), as well as smiley-face Tablet Bean Bags ($40), which include slide-in compartments for the tablet and a zippered pocket for earphones, cellphones or other goodies.
They're all soft and cuddly ? something that, as great as the iPad is, it is not.

ScienceDaily (Jan. 10, 2012) ? Of all the habitable parts of our planet, one ecosystem still remains largely unexplored and unknown to science: the igneous ocean crust.
This rocky realm of hard volcanic lava exists beneath ocean sediments that lie at the bottom of much of the world's oceans.
While scientists have estimated that microbes living in deep ocean sediments may represent as much as one-third of Earth's total biomass, the habitable portion of the rocky ocean crust may be 10 times as great.
Yet biologists know very little about this ecosystem. The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Mid-Atlantic Ridge Microbiology Expedition set out to change that.
An international team of scientists sailing onboard the research vessel JOIDES Resolution recently returned from installing observatories beneath the seafloor in "North Pond"--a remote area in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Scientists hope that data collected from these subseafloor observatories (known as CORKs, or Circulation Obviation Retrofit Kits), along with studies of rock and sediment samples collected during the expedition, will help to shed light on the role tiny subseafloor microbes play in shaping Earth's oceans and crust.
Led by co-chief scientists Wolfgang Bach of the University of Bremen in Germany and Katrina Edwards of the University of Southern California, the expedition began in Bridgetown, Barbados, on Sep. 16, 2011, and concluded in Ponta Delgada in the Azores on Nov. 17, 2011.
Two CORKs were successfully installed, and sediment and basalt core samples were recovered. CORK observatories are designed to remain in place for up to ten years.
The North Pond subseafloor observatories will allow active experiments to be conducted below the bottom of the ocean for as much as five years after deployment.
Scientists from the expedition plan to return to these observatories with the first of many submersible expeditions in early 2012.
"The innovative and novel experiments and observations from this expedition promise to greatly advance our understanding of the nature and extent of microbial life in the most widespread of environments--the Earth's ocean crust," says Jamie Allan, program director for IODP at the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). NSF co-funds IODP.
In the coming months and years, researchers hope to answer three main questions:
IODP is supported by two lead agencies: NSF and Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

LISBON, Portugal ? Europe won some further modest respite from its debt crisis Wednesday as Germany and Portugal became the latest countries to borrow with relative ease ahead of a hazard-filled few weeks for the 17-nation eurozone.
Both countries saw their borrowing costs dip at the auctions, in a further sign that investors may have temporarily put some of their concerns over Europe's debt crisis to one side at the start of the new year in the wake of fairly-buoyant U.S. economic data. Italy and the Netherlands have also managed to sell their debt over the past week or so in a fairly trouble-free manner.
Germany, the biggest contributor in Europe's bailouts, managed to sell euro4.06 billion ($5.3 billion) in its benchmark ten-year bonds Wednesday at an average yield of 1.93 percent, down on the previous 1.98 percent it had to pay. But demand barely covered the bonds on offer.
And Portugal, which was bailed out last April after being locked out of international markets, paid a markedly lower interest rate to borrow euro1 billion ($1.3 billion) in three-month treasury bills.
The German and Portuguese auctions come ahead of severe tests for eurozone leaders as they try to navigate their way out of their crisis over too much debt in some countries.
Eurozone governments are struggling to convince financial markets that indebted governments will not default and should be able to borrow at affordable rates to repay debts as they come due. Greece, Ireland and Portugal have needed bailouts, while much larger Italy and Spain have also seen their borrowing costs rise ominously.
Italy, the recent focus of the crisis, must borrow to cover euro53 billion ($69 billion) in expiring debt in the first quarter alone in a series of debt auctions beginning Jan. 13. The auctions will test of whether the government of new Prime Minister Mario Monti is making progress in regaining market confidence through budget cuts and efforts to improve weak economic growth.
Further trouble could come from a slowing eurozone economy that may already have shrunk in the fourth quarter. Many economists predict an outright recession, which would be two quarters of negative growth.
Germany's DIW economic institute became the latest on Wednesday to lower its 2012 growth estimate for Europe's largest economy to 0.6 percent from 1.0 percent as trouble in other eurozone countries reduces German exports to them.
Greece must also win final approval of a second, euro130 billion bailout without which it can't pay its debts. As part of that the government must strike a deal with creditors for a 50 percent reduction in their holdings of Greek debt to try to put the country back on its feet. Many in the markets think a bigger writedown will be needed.
At the Portuguese auction, the rate fell to an eight-month low of 4.346 percent and was sharply down from the 4.873 percent rate it had to pay in a similar auction last month. Though Portugal cannot tap long-term bond markets at a reasonable price, it has sought to maintain a market presence by issuing shorter-term debt.
Analysts said the improvement may represent a sign that Portugal is regaining the markets' confidence as it carries out spending cuts and revenue increases in return for its euro78 billion ($102 billion) bailout.
"There's been an improvement in the risk perception of Portuguese debt, which has driven rates down" said Filipe Silva, debt manager at Portuguese financial group Banco Carregosa. "Now we just need to see whether it holds."
Germany's auction was better than one in November which raised fears that Europe's debt crisis was spiraling out of control when the government sold only 65 percent of debt on offer.
Still, there was some concern voiced over the amount of German bunds investors actually wanted Wednesday.
Bids for euro5.14 billion ($6.7 billion) worth of bonds exceeded the full amount on offer of euro5 billion ($6.5 billion), but only barely, counting the euro943 million ($1.23 billion) the government kept back for secondary market operations.
"Yes, it was covered, so that's a relief," said Marc Ostwald, a markets strategist at Monument Securities. "On the other hand, the coverage was poor."
Ostwald said the low interest rate offered little attraction to typical buyers such as annuity and insurance companies, as it was too small to cover their obligations. Meanwhile, investors seeking only a safe haven were more likely to want much shorter-term issues.
"Clearly, it wasn't the best cover, but you wouldn't expect it to be," he said.
Germany can borrow cheaply and for longer because its finances are among the strongest in the eurozone but concerns about the costs of bailing out other countries have raised questions about its finances too.
Wednesday's auction results follow a recent trend somewhat. On Tuesday, the Netherlands saw its borrowing rates fell to near zero percent in a pair of short-term auctions, in a sign that investors are searching out what they consider to be Europe's safer assets at a time of concern over the level of debts in a number of countries.
Italy, the eurozone's third-largest economy, also sold large chunks of debt last week and analysts say the run of smooth auctions may be largely due to a massive euro489 billion ($636 billion) infusion of cheap, 3-year credit to eurozone banks by the European Central Bank.
Some of that cheap money may be being used by some banks to buy higher-yielding short-term debt, though Italy's longer-term borrowing rate in the markets remain at dangerously elevated levels near 7 percent.

McHugh contributed from Frankfurt, Germany.
MANILA, Philippines ? The Philippine government on Friday ordered the shutdown of gold-mining tunnels threatened by landslides in a southern town where a chunk of a mountain tumbled down on sleeping residents, killing at least 27 people.
The landslide struck hours before dawn Thursday on a mountain dotted with mine shafts and crude shanties with corrugated metal roofs in Napnapan village in Compostela Valley province.
It was the area's second deadly landslide in a year ? 20 people were killed in a neighboring village last April ? and prompted the environment secretary to call for curbing permits in the region's small-scale gold-mining industry.
Authorities in Pantukan township, where Napnapan village is located, expect to complete a survey next week that will indicate where landslides are likely to happen. Mines that sit in the danger zone will be ordered shut, and the workers and their families living on the mountain will be relocated, said Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo.
Robredo, who flew over the village in a military helicopter Friday, also ordered that gold ore processing be moved from Napnapan village to the town center so that the miners' families don't have to live with them near the mines.
"It will be more expensive, but it will be more safe," he said. "I am sure there will be resistance ? that's why this will be enforced by the armed forces and the police."
There are an estimated 1,000 mining tunnels in Pantukan, Robredo said.
Mine shafts honeycomb the hills and mountains in Pantukan, making them unstable and causing frequent accidents. The area is a magnet for the poor and the unemployed who do not have any training in mining but hope to strike it rich in a country where the poorest live on about one dollar a day. The miners dig for gold with basic implements ? pickaxes and iron bars ? and carry the ore in sacks on their backs.
Pantukan town spokesman Arnulfo Lantayan told The Associated Press that five more bodies were recovered Friday, bringing to 27 the number of confirmed fatalities. Three of the dead were sisters, aged 6-14.
Lantayan said chances of finding survivors under 15-25 feet (5 to 8 meters) of muddy debris were "very slim."
Officials have no good estimate of how many people are missing, but said early reports of up to 100 were overblown. Many may have stayed elsewhere for the Christmas holiday, they said, or may have fled their mountainside shanties earlier in the night when the hill started to crumble.
It was difficult to determine the number of missing because local authorities have no reliable records of the mostly migrant miners who work in the area with their families, Civil Defense chief Benito Ramos said.
Boulders, trees and muddy soil tumbled down the slopes with a loud crash "like a dump truck unloading gravel and sand," said survivor Darwin Aguinawon, 27. "In only three seconds, our house came rolling down the slope."
Army photographs show a steep mountainside that looks like it was gouged by a giant shovel. Houses are buried in rubble or lying on their sides, while crumpled metal roofs and trees lay nearby.
One tunnel entrance appeared half-covered by rocks and soil. It was not known how many mine shafts have been blocked by debris or whether there were people inside.
A fissure in the mountain discovered last year likely was aggravated by heavy rains and continuous mining in the saturated ground.
Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Ramon Paje said authorities had warned residents and local officials last year that the fissure made the mountain susceptible to a landslide.
He urged local officials to stop handing out small-scale mining permits, now estimated to number about 3,000 all around the watershed.
