Activists: 53 killed in ongoing Syria offensives

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian government shelling and offensives against rebel-held towns killed at least 53 civilians across the country on Saturday, activists said, as the U.S. posted online satellite images of troop deployments that cast further doubt on whether the regime intends to comply with an internationally sponsored peace plan.

Syrian President Bashar Assad has accepted a cease-fire deadline brokered by international envoy Kofi Annan, which calls for his forces to pull out of towns and cities by Tuesday and for both government and rebels to lay down their arms by 6 a.m. local time Thursday.

But the escalating violence of the past few days has fueled accusations that Assad is rushing to stamp out as much of the year-old uprising against him as he can before next week's cease-fire. The Syrian government said it has begun to withdraw forces ahead of the cease-fire but activists say no significant pullouts have taken place and troops, checkpoints and snipers remain in almost all major flashpoint towns and cities.

"They are systematically trying to crush the revolt wherever they can and regardless of the human cost," said activist Mohammad Saeed in the Damascus suburb of Douma.

U.S. ambassador to Syria Robert Ford said the Syrian government appears to have pulled back some of its forces from towns and cities but in other places has kept in place or simply shifted around troops and armored vehicles. He said he was basing his information on satellite images before and after the alleged pullouts which were posted on the U.S. Embassy Facebook page Saturday.

Arrests, sweeps, and the artillery bombardment of opposition strongholds have continued, Ford's statement said.

"This is not the reduction in offensive Syrian government security operations that all agree must be the first step for the Annan initiative to succeed," the late Friday statement said.

"The regime and the Syrian people should know that we are watching. The regime cannot hide the truth," it added.

Ford was forced to leave Syria in February citing security concerns, and the U.S. Embassy there was closed indefinitely.

Western leaders along with the Syrian opposition have cast doubt on Assad's intentions, suggesting he is playing for time and is not serious about the plan, which aims to pave the way for talks between the regime and the opposition on a political solution.

The government has launched offensives in several parts of the country in the past few days in a desperate attempt to crush the rebels.

Opposition groups said at least 53 people were killed across Syria Saturday, most of them in government shelling and clashes in the village of al-Latamneh in the central Hama province. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said four people were killed in the nearby Tibet al-Imam area.

An amateur video posted by activists on the Internet showed al-Latamneh residents crying "Allahu Akbar" as they held up a small girl, apparently dead. The video also shows the bodies of several men covered in white sheets lined up on the ground.

In the nearby province of Homs, activists also reported shelling of the rebel-held areas of Rastan, Deir Baalabeh and Qusair, where they said at least three people including a mother and her son were killed.

The Observatory also said 13 unidentified bodies were found in Deir Baalabeh and ten in Hreitan in the northern province of Idlib.

In other violence, Lebanese security officials said six people were killed and 21 wounded in a rocket attack on a Lebanese bus after it crossed into Syria Saturday. The bus was carrying pilgrims to Iraq and was struck after it crossed the Joussiyeh border crossing in eastern Lebanon into Syria.

The officials said five Syrians and a Lebanese were killed in the attack. It was not immediately clear who fired the rocket, or how many of the dead were on the bus or bystanders.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the April 10 timeline "is not an excuse for continued killing." In statements made Friday, he urged the government to "immediately and unconditionally" cease all military actions against the Syrian people.

An offensive in Idlib over the past few days has triggered a massive wave of refugees who crossed the border to Turkey with horrific accounts of mass graves, massacres and burned-out homes.

Activists have reported about 100 dead in the villages of Taftanaz and Killi, both in Idlib, in recent days.

The escalating violence has dimmed hopes that the fighting, which the U.N. says has killed more than 9,000 people, will end anytime soon. The country appears to be spiraling toward civil war ? a fearsome development that could bring a regional conflagration.

Ambassador Ford urged Assad to allow a U.N. monitoring force into the country and to give it full access to investigate the regime's compliance with the peace plan.

On Friday, a small U.N. advance team headed by a Norwegian major general, Robert Mood, met with Syria's deputy foreign minister to discuss the cease-fire plans. Mood is to set up a U.N. monitoring force with 200 to 250 members if the peace plan succeeds.

(AP) ? The judge overseeing former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky's child sex-abuse case said he would rule later on a number of issues raised at a pretrial hearing Thursday, including a request to have the charges dismissed.

During a 20-minute hearing that Sandusky attended, defense attorney Joe Amendola asked Judge John Cleland ? if he opts to deny that request ? to deny it without prejudice so he can raise it again later.

Prosecutors said more information about Sandusky's conduct could result from an ongoing grand jury investigation. Cleland met with attorneys behind closed doors after the hearing to set deadlines for disclosure of other information before trial, including anything resulting from the grand jury investigation.

Amendola also told the court that the attorneys for two key witnesses ? Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and former vice president Gary Schultz ? had informed him they would invoke the Fifth Amendment if called to testify at Sandusky's trial.

Curley and Schultz are charged with perjury and failing to report allegations of child abuse. Both have pleaded not guilty.

In a catch-all pretrial motion filed last month, Amendola argued some charges were not specific enough, there was not enough evidence in some cases, and the statute of limitations may have expired for others.

Sandusky, 68, faces 52 criminal counts for alleged abuse of 10 boys over 15 years. He is confined to home while awaiting trial and has repeatedly denied the charges.

Both sides agree that prospective jurors should be questioned individually, and sequestered during the trial now set to begin June 5.

(AP) ? The firebrand founder of a populist anti-immigrant party in Italy, whose crucial support kept Silvio Berlusconi in power in three governments, resigned Thursday amid a widening corruption scandal over party funds.

Umberto Bossi quit as Northern League secretary, the top post, at a summit of party officials in Milan and repeatedly rebuffed pleas by his colleagues to change his mind, said a League statement.

In a show of support for Bossi, 70, who had made a stunning comeback after a stroke in 2004 left him barely able to speak, party officials made him League president and also asked him "to carry on with his political activity with even greater determination and conviction," the party said.

Until a new secretary is chosen, the League will be led by three other officials, including Roberto Maroni, the party's No. 2, who served as interior minister under Berlusconi.

League official Matteo Salvini, speaking on Radio Padania, the League's broadcaster, quoted Bossi as saying that wrongdoers in a scandal involving alleged skimming of party funds should "pay" for their errors. Bossi himself has denied wrongdoing, but corruption prosecutors have been probing the activities of his family, including his son, Renzo, a rising star in the party.

Bossi insisted on stepping down as party chief "to better defend and safeguard the image of the movement and his family in this delicate phase," the League statement said.

Prosecutors cannot publicly discuss details of an ongoing probe, but Italian newspapers reported on Thursday that investigators suspect that public funds, earmarked for political parties, were embezzled and spent privately, including allegedly on perks for Bossi family members.

Thursday's League meeting also saw the naming of an official to replace the party's treasurer, Francesco Belsito, who resigned earlier in the scandal. In a bid to remove corruption suspicions overshadowing the party, League officials have decided to immediately submit the party's ledgers and assets to review by independent accountants.

Maroni, insisting he was standing by Bossi, urged the party to clean house.

"Now let's get down to work, to clean up, taking a look at the books and opening all the drawers," Maroni told the Italian news agency ANSA. He added that if Bossi should decide to regain the League's top post at a party congress in the fall, he would back him.

Bossi's decades-long support made him Berlusconi's lynchpin coalition partner in three governments led by the billionaire media mogul. When Bossi abruptly yanked his backing in late 1994, Berlusconi's first government collapsed.

Berlusconi resigned as premier in November amid Italy's worsening financial crisis and was replaced by economist Mario Monti to save the country from the eurozone debt crisis.

Berlusconi has been coy about whether he will run again after parliament's term runs out in spring 2013, when the non-elected Monti has said he will leave office. Berlusconi has tapped his former justice minister, Angelino Alfano, as secretary of his own Freedom People party and political heir.

Berlusconi has spent most of his political career fighting corruption probes and is currently on trial in Milan on charges of having had sex with a Moroccan prostitute when she was 17 and legally underage, then trying to use his office to cover it up. He denies wrongdoing.

The scandal involving alleged embezzlement of League funds has contradicted Bossi's justification for creating the party as a regional bulwark in the affluent north against what he denounced as corrupt and tax-wasting Rome-based parties.

Bossi originally pushed for the north to secede from the lagging south, but later softened his goal to federalism for a country heavily controlled by Rome. The maverick whipped up a largely local, folksy movement called the Lombard League into the Northern League, the main coalition partner in all of Berlusconi's governments.

The combination of the smooth-talking, impeccably dressed billionaire and Bossi, an often vulgar-speaking, ill-dressed homebody, made for the oddest of political couples. Essentially acknowledging his political debt to Bossi, Berlusconi made crackdowns on immigrants a plank of his government.

Why we have plenty of fish in the sea

Thursday, April 5, 2012

New work from the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, with collaborators at Stanford University and five other groups, has pinpointed evolution in action.

By determining genomic sequence from many groups of stickleback fish, the scientists were able to show specific genomic changes leading to the ability of different fish populations to adapt to new environments. "We were pleased with the ability of genomics to show us what molecular changes are important in evolutionary processes," said Richard Myers, Ph.D., president and director of HudsonAlpha.

At the end of the last ice age, marine stickleback fish were present in many waters and then became separated into different populations in lakes and streams worldwide. These populations evolved separate traits, such as number of spines, body length or eye size, which allowed them to thrive in their specific habitat.

To tie these traits to specific DNA changes, the scientists generated a reference of the threespine stickleback fish genome at high quality. "With our reference genome and genetic map for stickleback, we will now be able to use it as a model organism for future studies of adaptation and environmental selection," said HudsonAlpha faculty investigator Jeremy Schmutz.

Scientists then sequenced 21 pairs of fish that varied at different traits and compared them to each other and to the reference fish genome. Small regions of the fish genome stood out due to changes in the genomic DNA, and many of these could be related to how the fish look and behave.

Two interesting findings stood out. First, the changes between fish populations often happened not by mutations in single DNA bases, but by inversions of very large chunks of DNA on fish chromosomes. When these large inversions of DNA occur, fish can no longer breed with each other effectively and start to become separate species.

Second, the scientists saw that when evolution allowing fish to adapt to their environment seemed to come from single DNA base changes, these were most often in regions of the genome that regulate genes and proteins, instead of in the genes themselves. In contrast, previous work has shown that in laboratory or domesticated animals, changes in genes and proteins are found more often.

Jane Grimwood, Ph.D., also a faculty investigator at HudsonAlpha, explained, "The predominance of regulatory changes in the evolution of sticklebacks suggests that natural populations may behave differently than domesticated animals, and our genetic mapping of many species will advance similar studies in natural and wild organisms."

HudsonAlpha researchers have been part of the NHGRI - NIH funded Center for Excellence in Genome Sciences, or CEGS, project for developing stickleback as a model organism since 2002. As part of this effort, they and colleagues at Stanford University have produced genomic resources for several freshwater and marine stickleback fish. Currently, the HudsonAlpha Genome Sequencing Center is building a reference sequence for the Y chromosome for stickleback, as the sequenced fish was a female.

The paper "The genomic basis of adaptive evolution in threespine sticklebacks" will be published in the 4 April 2012 issue of the journalNature

How Homo Sapiens Became 'Masters Of The Planet'

The first Homo sapiens appeared on the planet some 200,000 years ago. But even though they looked fully human, they didn't act fully human until they began creating symbolic art, some 100,000 years later. Paleoanthropologist Ian Tattersall discusses those human origins in his book Masters of the Planet.

Health Petition: Truth in Advertising for Fashion Industries ...

When our idea of beautiful is made up of airbrushed photos, size 0 mannequins? and unhealthy models, it?s not surprising that women of all ages, and especially teens, feel inferior and strive for this fake body image. Maybe we wouldn?t be so critical of ourselves if there were real women with real curves in commercials ? then we would surely realize that not everyone?is?5?10 with long?legs, a size?0 waist and huge breasts.?Until then, we can?t escape the images ? they?re everywhere ? so what can we do to change the way we think of beautiful?

Well, Natalia, a 16 year-old sophomore at the International School of Boston, has come up with a solution that could really change the way we view the models in the ads. Only a few nights ago Natalia created a petition through Change.org in the hopes of ?holding fashion industries accountable and held to the same truth in advertising laws as the commercials we see that say: do not try this at home.?

Her idea: Companies that digitally alter photographs or commercials should have to label them ?indicating that they are not accurate representations.? Similarly, there should be labels on mannequins that say ?this is not what a real, healthy woman body looks like.?

The team at BodiMojo thought this was an amazing idea and we reached out to Natalia to find out the story behind the petition?

What inspired you to create the petition?

The inspiration to start my petition came as a result of attending the Harris Center public forum, Health is Beauty. As I sat listening to the discussion I couldn?t help but feel frustrated by the lack of awareness and sensitivity to the impact that advertising has on people?s feelings of self worth and self-image. Since I am recovering from an eating disorder myself, I felt short-changed by the inaction of those who have the power to make changes in society and the media.

What is the goal of your petition?

Understanding maybe a little too well the feelings of negative body image, I did not want to watch more girls go through the same struggles I have gone through. I have always been very open about my eating disorder because I believe that no one should feel alone in their battle. Thankfully, my road to recovery has been one I did not have to take alone.

Who do you hope to influence?

I want people to know that eating disorders are a real issue and going through it alone can be extremely painful. I have seen my own anorexia battle take too many things away from my life: it?s ruined holidays, friendships and school. So?I want to use my voice for those struggling to still find theirs. I want to take control of my own life and apply it to a good cause, rather than fighting against my own body.

How have friends and people responded to your efforts?

Friends and family are constantly supporting me, which makes me want to offer the same support to others struggling against eating disorders and the pressure to be perfect. Friends and classmates tell me ?Finally! Finally, someone is not shrinking away from their problems.?

What is something unexpected yet positive that came out of this project so far?

I think my biggest surprise in starting this petition is that for the first time in months, I felt empowered for doing something for myself and not for my eating disorder. So much of my eating disorder was about numbers: calories, scale, weight, size etc. So when I first posted the link to my petition on my blog, I decided that I didn?t want the number of people signing it or not signing to affect my overall goal.?I didn?t want to make it about how many people, but to make it about self-expression and determination.

What?s next?!

I simply hope to continue fighting and not to give up. I hope to spread greater awareness during every step of the way. I hope to take care of myself and along the way, help others too. I will no longer surrender to feeling unworthy for not being smart enough or skinny enough or pretty enough and I hope that others will follow me as I embrace who I am rather than trying to fit into a certain mold.

My eating disorder likes to always have a plan, to have everything mapped out, well at this point I don?t know what?s next- we?ll see what happens.
