What's More Important: Native Ads or Programmatic Buying? | Digiday

The digital media landscape appears to be splitting. On the one side is a world of custom integrations and native advertising. Meanwhile, the packaged squares are increasingly traded in real time through programmatic buying. Both are important trends. Digiday reached out to top publishers for their take on whether native advertising systems or programmatic buying will leave a bigger imprint on the digital media landscape.

Jason Pontin, publisher and editor-in-chief, Technology Review

The publisher in me says ?programmatic buying? will have a larger impact on digital media, but the editor-in-chief of a technology publication says, ?native ad formats.? In truth, both will have an impact. In the short term, programmatic buying will continue to drive down the price of digital advertising (at least on b2c sites), which will force digital publishers into a degrading race for page views, but in the longer term, native ad formats will offer advertisers better engagement with publishers? audiences, which might stabilize CPMs on websites and make mobile publishing a sustainable business.

Laurel Lane, manager, digital media revenue, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Programmatic buying is just another method of inventory procurement for the purposes of serving display banner ads ? whereas native ads can be something new and different that drive more consumer engagement and, therefore, are considered a more effective digital marketing choice. Even though I believe banner ads do still ?work? (quotes because the definition of what ?works? is definitely in the eye of the various advertisers) and programmatic buying may result in a higher level of targeting, we are still talking about the same old banner ad that was essentially the first form of online advertising on the Internet.

Vikram Somaya, vp of global operations and audience, Thomson Reuters:

Native advertising in its original avatar as advertorial content has been around for as long as editorial integrity has been compromisable, which is to say, since the dawn of publishing. This is but a new wave occasioned by the advent of content producers that do allow for more chameleonesque commercial formats because they are by nature interactive, rather than didactic, platforms. I think programmatic buying in all its forms is necessary for the future of online advertising. It will underpin growth in all message formats ? native or otherwise. As ignorable inventory grows in scale and forces content producers to find new ways to monetize audiences, programmatic methodologies will have to proliferate to allow both buy-side and sell-side to efficiently utilize new messaging channels.

Rich Antoniello, CEO, Complex Media

Native ads will ultimately prove more impactful, especially as online video commands a larger percentage of brand dollars. Brands will be looking for real impact and influence against targeted audiences in a truly engaged manner; native formats offer increased measurement and transparency on behavior. Programmatic buying becomes less effective as it is more of a reach/awareness driver.?Native ads have always been important to the Complex business (currently 35 percent of our business), and we expect that to grow significantly as we expand aggressively into video in 2013.

Curt Hecht, chief global revenue officer, The Weather Company?

Programmatic will have a bigger impact in a multi-, multi-billion dollar industry. Programmatic buying is largely about automation and eliminating a lot of inefficiency between buyer and seller, and leveraging data to be more precise in targeting the audience the buyer?s trying to reach. We?ve already seen programmatic significantly impact the way agencies buy through their trading desks. We?ve seen Google and Facebook move into the No. 1 and No. 2 spots driven by automation, self-serve tools and data. We think that trend will continue on a global level, and for all media. Programmatic will reinvent the way media is bought and sold and will impact both native and standard ad formats. There?s room for native when it?s a highly unique consumer experience ? Facebook and Twitter have shown us that. But to run native ads, you need size and scale, and few companies have that.

Julie Hansen, president and COO, Business Insider?

While both are important trends, native ads are dramatically transforming the marketing ecosystem, while programmatic buying is essentially just a shift in buying behavior. Native ads require a significant mindset change on the part of agencies and clients, as well as a major staffing commitment by publishers. Clients and publishers must work hand in hand to create these new ad formats, often requiring significant content production resources from both partners. Given the growth of native ads, it?s incumbent upon agencies to figure out how to buy and evaluate these programs. In contrast, programmatic buying has a minimal effect on client behavior. Its success is evaluated according to existing ROI metrics. It has only a small impact on how publishers staff; sure, they need to accommodate programmatic in their team structures, but this doesn?t require a trained army.

John Battelle, founder and executive chairman, Federated Media

If I had to wager a guess, I?d have to say that programmatic will be a larger force, but only if you take ?native? to mean the native units at domain-specific platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and the like. But it?s very important to define your terms here because in five years time, I think you will be able to buy all of these ?native? units across a unified ?programmatic? platform ? and that platform has not yet been built. We are, as an industry, heading in that direction, and it?s a very exciting one. When programmatic merges with native and is fueled by data and a transparent, objective framework, everyone wins.

Romney And Obama And Their Energy Efficiency Views

Editor?s Note: EarthTechling is proud to repost this article?courtesy of Alliance to Save Energy. Author credit goes to Rob Mosher and Christina Ospina.

During the course of the presidential campaign, surrogates of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama and the candidates themselves have made statements related to energy issues generally and energy efficiency matters specifically.? While neither candidate has spoken in substantial detail about energy efficiency, it is worth noting that both campaigns have offered opinions.? For additional clarity, here?s a break-down of those instances.

Energy Efficiency in the 2012 Presidential Campaign

Obama Campaign

Throughout his 2012 presidential campaign, Obama has stated that he views energy efficiency as a means to reduce pollution, spending, and dependence on foreign oil. Should he be reelected, the President has pledged to continue advancing energy efficiency initiatives, particularly by working to retrofit schools, hospitals, and other buildings.

During the?second presidential debate, Obama stressed the importance of energy efficiency as a means to build energy sources for the future.? He highlighted his record on energy efficiency, including investments to increase vehicle fuel economy standards, and said America must ?continue to figure out how we have efficient energy, because ultimately that?s how we?re going to reduce demand, and that?s what?s going to keep gas prices lower.?

Also during the campaign, Obama?told the Des Moines Register?that if America ?achieved efficiencies at the level of, let?s say, Japan, we could actually cut our power bill by about 20-25%.?

Romney Campaign

Governor Romney?s?energy platform?does not mention energy efficiency.

Romney also has voiced concerns to the fuel efficiency standards that were recently implemented.? ?The government CAFE [Corporate Average Fuel Economy] standards hurt domestic automakers and provided a benefit to some of the foreign automakers,? Romney said?when speaking to the Detroit Economic Club?earlier this year.

Should he be elected president, Romney may identify areas to include energy efficiency in his agenda, but such policies would be approached with a critical eye,?Romney Campaign surrogate Oren Cass told E&E TV. ?The interesting thing about energy efficiency and government policy related to it is that it is most of the time a solution in search of a problem,? Cass said, describing Romney?s views on energy efficiency.

How the Candidates? Energy Platforms Compare

Very little has been offered by Governor Romney or President Obama as candidates on policy proposals that would advance energy efficiency. However, the candidates? energy platforms suggest the potential for a few approaches. ?For instance, on vehicle efficiency, Obama would continue to promote higher vehicle efficiency standards. Conversely, Romney opposes vehicle fuel economy standards as ?disadvantageous for domestic manufacturers.?

Similar Goals with Potentially Different Approaches

Obama and Romney may share similar goals in their energy platforms, such as to increase domestic oil production, but their strategies to tackling America?s energy consumption could differ. For the President, energy efficiency is another opportunity to decrease demand for oil and reduce fuel costs, thereby improving energy security. While the former Governor has been mostly unclear about how energy efficiency initiatives should be approached in the broader context.? As the election approaches, the question remains as to how the outcome of the election will determine America?s energy future.

Pakistan parents killed daughter for eyeing boy

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? A Pakistani couple accused of killing their 15-year-old daughter by pouring acid on her carried out the attack because she sullied the family's honor by looking at a boy, the couple said in an interview broadcast Monday by the BBC.

The girl's death underlines the problem of so-called "honor killings" in Pakistan where women are often killed for marrying or having relationships not approved by their families or because they are perceived to have somehow dishonored their family.

The girl's parents, Mohammad Zafar and his wife Zaheen, recounted the Oct. 29 incident from jail. The father said the girl had turned to look at a boy who drove by on a motorcycle, and he told her it was wrong.

"She said 'I didn't do it on purpose. I won't look again.' By then I had already thrown the acid. It was her destiny to die this way," the girl's mother told the British broadcaster.

Television footage of the couple showed them standing behind bars in separate, but adjoining jail cells.

The father said the family had already come under public censure because of their older daughter's behavior, but he did not detail what exactly he meant.

Pakistani officials initially said the attack occurred because the girl supposedly had an affair with a boy.

According to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, at least 943 women were killed in the name of honor last year. Only 20 of the women were reported to have been given medical care before they died, the report said. The real toll is believed to be higher because many of the crimes go unreported.

"Throughout the year, women were callously killed in the name of honor when they went against family wishes in any way, or even on the basis of suspicion that they did so. Women were sometimes killed in the name of honor over property disputes and inheritance rights," the report said.

Getting Your Home In Order For The Holidays | Luxury Home Builder ...

Gingerbread Manor

Gingerbread Manor

?

?

?

Between work, school, the kids and all your regular daily responsibilities, getting your home in order for the holidays can quickly become an overwhelming experience. Here are some great tips for getting the job done without over-extending yourself.

1. Have your chimney professionally serviced. The holiday season coincides with fireplace season. Nothing beats a roaring fire on cold nights, however protecting your home and family by having your fireplace and chimney serviced is important. Small animals, leaves, and left over soot and debris can prevent proper ventilation and cause a fire if left ignored.

2. Protect your home from power lines. If you have power lines running from the street to your home be sure they are clear of trees and branches. If not, contact your power supply company to report any issues. Also, be aware that trees can be problematic for power lines when heavy snow falls. If you have the potential for this issue within your property, you may be responsible for trimming or removal.

3. Equip your home with several well placed fire extinguishers. The holiday season normally goes hand in hand with cooking, which can be the catalyst for cooking fires and accidents. Holiday lights and Christmas trees also present fire hazards. In case of an emergency, it is important to have fire extinguishers handy. Be sure to educate your family on their location and how to operate them.

4. Protect your pets. The coming months present new dangers to your favorite furry friends. Heavy snow accumulation means that some animals may be able to jump the fence in your backyard. Be aware that certain holiday flowers like Poinsettias are poisonous to our canine and feline friends. Certain types of ice melt can also be hazardous to paws or worse, if it?s ingested.

5. Protect your home from afar. A lot of people escape to warmer temperatures during the fall and winter months. There are several ways to make sure your home is protected in your absence. It may be tempting to brag about your vacation to your friends, however, you should never announce that you are going out of town on Facebook or Twitter! Set your porch light, in addition to a few indoor lights, on timers. If possible, leave a car in your driveway. It?s also a good idea to have the post office hold your mail, or if you feel comfortable, ask a neighbor.

Happy Holidays!

Syria mediator wants U.N. resolution based on Geneva deal

CAIRO (Reuters) - The international mediator on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, called on Sunday for world powers to issue a U.N. Security Council resolution based on a deal they reached in June to set up a transitional government in a bid to end the bloodshed.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking at the same Cairo news conference, dismissed the need for a resolution and said others were stoking violence by backing rebels. His comment highlighted divisions and the impasse over Syria's civil war.

Russia and China, both permanent council members, have vetoed three Western-backed U.N. draft resolutions condemning President Bashar al-Assad's government for the violence. The other three permanent members are the United States, Britain and France.

Peaceful protests began in Syria in March 2011 but turned into an armed revolt after Assad turned his military on the demonstrators. About 32,000 people have been killed.

The Geneva Declaration, that was agreed in June 30 when Kofi Annan was still international mediator, called for a transitional administration but did not specify what role, if any, Russia's ally Assad would have.

"It is important that the Geneva Declaration be turned into a resolution from the Security Council to gain the power to enable it to become an applicable political project," Brahimi said after a meeting between him, Lavrov and Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby in the Egyptian capital.

"I encourage member states at the Security Council to continue talks to reach this resolution," said Brahimi, appointed by the United Nations and League. He earlier pressed for a ceasefire during a Muslim holiday last month that failed.

Lavrov said both sides should be forced to sit down to negotiations, saying Moscow backed the Geneva Declaration.

"Unfortunately, some countries which participated in Geneva don't speak with the government but only with the opposition and encourage them to fight till victory and this has very negative implications," he said.

"Maybe we don't need a resolution" from the Security Council, he said, adding that a resolution could lead to more instability by creating conditions to remove the Syrian government. "This is a successful recipe to continue the bloodshed," he said.

Elaraby noted that disagreement between the five veto-wielding powers on the Security Council prevented reaching any binding agreement.

China said on Thursday it had proposed a new initiative to head off an escalation of violence in Syria, including a phased, region-by-region ceasefire and the establishment of a transitional governing body.

"There is no military solution to the crisis," Brahimi said, adding that without a political process to end the violence "the crisis won't stay inside Syria but will flow to neighbouring countries and possibly distant countries."

New oil workers key bloc in all-important ND Senate race

MANNING, N.D. (AP) ? Shirley Meyer grew up on a ranch north of Dickinson, N.D., and has represented her rural district in the state House for a decade. But when she knocks on doors in her re-election campaign, she sometimes feels like a stranger in her own home.

"I was just shocked at how many new people there were," Meyer said during a recent campaign swing through a south Dickinson mobile home park. "I didn't see one North Dakota (license) plate."

The oil boom that has transformed North Dakota's economy and reshaped the rolling prairie landscape has also added an element of mystery to next week's election by adding thousands of potential new voters to the region's tiny electorate. And the political suspense is tied to the national question of which party controls the Senate in January.

North Dakota's contest is one of several states with Senate contests that have remained tied for months, with no signs of clarifying before Tuesday's election. A handful of them, such as Montana's Senate race one state west, may not even be resolved then.

Republicans are still looking to gain four seats they need to win the Senate majority if President Barack Obama wins reelection, three if GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney prevails.

Workers from all over the country have pouring into western North Dakota for jobs in the booming Bakken oil shale region. Dickinson, a city of 16,000 that didn't grow at all between 1990 and 2000, is now surging past 20,000 residents, with acres of new temporary housing. By one state measure, the number of oilfield workers has increased from 5,600 to 14,000 since the last presidential election. And many of the new arrivals are eligible to vote.

What that means for North Dakota politics, or individual candidates, is anyone's guess.

"I'm just hoping that I have enough ballots," said Joan Hollekim, the county auditor in Mountrail County, North Dakota's biggest oil producer. She increased her ballot printing order by 25 percent, and already has more than 600 early votes, a record.

Beth Innis, the auditor in neighboring Williams County, said she's already booked more than 2,500 absentee votes, which is double what she expected.

"I thought it would be big," Innis said of the rising number of voters. "I didn't think it would be this big."

In North Dakota, the only state that does not have voter registration, any citizen over 18 who has lived in the same place for at least 30 days can cast a ballot. That would include oilfield workers who may actually be living elsewhere and commute home to see their families.

Democrat Heidi Heitkamp and Republican Rick Berg are both pitching hard for the votes of North Dakota's energy workers. In a final campaign swing this week, Berg visited an oilfield trucking service company, a natural gas processing plant and a coal mine in western North Dakota.

Heitkamp talks up her advocacy for North Dakota's oil and coal industries when she served as state attorney general and tax commissioner. In one of her television ads, she speaks over the noise of a passing train of oil tanker cars while promising to support development of a new North Dakota refinery to process crude.

The oil industry is making sure its work force knows how to participate. A recent newsletter from the North Dakota Petroleum Council instructed workers who live in recreational vehicles or "skid shacks"? tiny huts, often no larger than a single-car garage, which can be hauled on flatbed trailers ? how to request mail ballots.

The Brighter Future Alliance, a nonprofit group with ties to prominent North Dakota Republicans, has conducted voter information workshops in several of the temporary housing camps dotted throughout western North Dakota.

"We have focused on what we think is a critical thing for the country, and that is to pursue domestic energy supplies..." said Shane Goettle, an alliance official and former aide to Republican Sen. John Hoeven. "I think they can well be motivated to show up."

It's unclear how many new workers will vote.

Patty Caldwell, who started cleaning trailer houses at North Dakota oil well drilling sites more than a year ago to stave off foreclosure of her home in Oregon, said she wanted to make her voice heard.

"I just figured that I'm part of this community now," said Caldwell, whose company is in New Hradec, a hamlet about 10 miles north of Dickinson. "I have friends here. There's issues that I'm concerned about."

Monty Leonard, who drives a truck for a company that hauls water for the oil industry, came here from Oklahoma two years ago. He is casting his first vote in North Dakota.

Leonard said he has been following the presidential campaign, but is not familiar with the North Dakota candidates.

"I haven't been here very long, so I don't know the people," Leonard said of the candidates.

The potential magnitude of the oilfield vote ? if it votes ? is clearly visible. Across the area, rows of temporary trailers are plunked in the middle of brown, treeless pastures, while smoke-belching earth movers prepare space for new housing developments and business construction.

This year, as many as 4,300 new voters have been added to a state voter database in the nine largest oil-producing counties. That's more people than live in 26 of North Dakota's 53 counties, and a significant number in a state where 160,000 votes could elect either Berg or Heitkamp in their closely fought race.

Almost 533,000 North Dakotans are eligible to vote, a 7 percent increase since the last presidential election, the state Commerce Department says.

Meyer, a Democrat, said she has tried to "hit the new areas" in her re-election campaign.

She said some of the workers had absentee ballot paperwork.

"The vast majority of them that I visited with said, 'We work 16 hours a day, and we have no intention of voting" in North Dakota, she said.

Other lawmakers said they doubted the new residents would be rushing to the polls.

"I don't think they're going to influence (election results) a lot for the local stuff. They're really just doing their work, and sending money home to their families," said state Rep. Bob Skarphol, a Republican from Tioga.

Marketing Agency Solutions - PDF

Marketing Agency Solutions

All of the people that are in your down line should be communicating and participating with
others. Might they be shy? Are they experiencing difficulties? Promote an atmosphere where
they feel comfortable communicating with the other marketers in your network, and also
raising questions or issues directly to you. The best teams are ones where each member
participates.

You must make the mental decision that you are going to succeed when you get involved
with network marketing. This is something that cannot be taken lightly, instead you need to
treat it as though it were your own brick and mortar business. If you do not think your
business is real, it will not be real.

Some people think that networking marketing is all about quantity; however, the reality is that
quality is always much more important than quantity. A successful network needs people
who work hard to spread its connecting lines, thus bringing profit to all the network members.

A well-maintained, frequently-used email database is a vital tool you should use if you intend
to be successful in network marketing. It does not matter if you derive this list from feedback
on your site or if you purchase it, having a lengthy list you can use will aid you in increasing
your business.

Become the go-to expert in network marketing for your industry. Use one-of-a-kind
promotions to make your company stand out. Offering something unique can cause your
competitors to copy you, in hopes that they can generate the same kind of booming business
you're getting. It is easy to copy other's ideas, but being original can really pay off big for you.

Consider structuring your network marketing website as a learning tutorial. "How-to" sites are
very popular and proven to garner high traffic. It also means visitors will stay on your site
longer. Your income from advertising will likely increase and you increase the potential for
new network members.

Network marketing is a business, not a part time casual venture. In order to really make
money, you have to work at this job just like any other profession.

There are many people who are willing to share what they have learned about network
marketing, and you should always be ready to hear what they have to say. One of the best
ways to do this nowadays is through podcasts. Listen to different ones to find the best one
available.

Use a third-party firm to complete some of your network marketing tasks. You might not have
the resources or manpower at your disposal for this kind of advertising. If you hire someone
to do it for you, it will save time and you will find more time to deal with other issues in your

life.

Whatever product you are promoting, make sure you know what the product is, and research
it thoroughly first. If you do not have knowledge and enthusiasm for what you are doing, you
will not be able to inspire those same feelings in others. Enthusiasm for everything you do is
going to be a key component to achieving great network marketing skills.

Whatever success you see being achieved around you, seek to copy it. Look to the
organization's leaders for inspiration and motivation. marketing
