Dear Beyonce: Why We Love You Till The End Of Time

Above the Buzz pays homage to Queen B after the singer pens a few heartfelt letters to her own idols.

These days, Beyoncé is breaking down her personal "fourth wall," letting fans into her life more and more, after living as a pop-star enigma for more than a decade.

She recently re-launched her website, began tweeting, started a personal Tumblr account and even Skyped with a contest winner this week after her "End of Time" remix competition.

Somewhere in there, Blue Ivy's mama found the time to handwrite letters to several famous people and post them on her site. She shared her warm, fuzzy feelings for some key figures, including First Lady Michelle Obama, the late New York artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and R&B star Sade . In honor of that, I decided to turn this week's Above the Buzz into a letter to Beyoncé, in the key of B, of course.

Dear Beyoncé,
First off, I just want to say "Hey Girl!" You're truly an inspiration to girls everywhere. You represent ladies in a great way, what with your girl power anthems and messages of female independence.

And it seems these days, in spite of how busy you are, you're focused on heading back to school. Education is a really awesome message to spread to all the young women out there. Stay in school kids, right, B?

Next, I just want to let you know that I am still into 4. It's a pretty great album to just leave on repeat while I'm at work or just living life. I mean, those are some jams on there. And, not to quote you or anything, but you shared with Sade that her music helps you get through times, good and bad — well, back at you.

Also, you've been rocking some awesome street style recently. Those "cat" flats you donned a few weeks back have me dreaming of kitschy, animal-themed couture every night. I can only imagine the kind of crazy looks you are planning for the string of shows you have lined up next month in Atlantic City. I assume my tickets are in the mail?

Anyway, I don't want to take up too much of your time. I know you're busy being a mom and working on new music and probably prepping for your show and all, but if you and Jay-Z can make the time, I think I can pencil you guys in for dinner or whatever. I'm cool with wherever you guys pick. You know me, pretty easy-going and all. Alright then, talk to you later.

Your girl,
Jocelyn

Gaopeng, Groupon?s Flagging Effort in China, May Be Headed For A Merger with FTuan

gaopeng-logo-1This post is contributed by Ben Jiang, editor of TechNode, a bilingual blog based in China. Gaopeng, a joint venture between Groupon and Tencent, may be headed for a merger by the end of next month with FTuan, according to reports from local Chinese news agencies. Notably, FTuan is a rival Chinese daily deal service that Groupon's local partner Tencent invested in. If such a deal happened, it would underscore Tencent?s increasing control over the venture and Groupon's retreat in the Chinese market.?Gaopeng?s constant losses have apparently made Groupon think twice about its China venture.

Tesla pairs up with SolarCity, will power off-grid homes as well as cars

If you've ever dreamed of thumbing your nose at big energy and its expensive, polluting ways, then Tesla and a solar panel leasing company called SolarCity might be taking you a baby-step closer to reality. Although recognized mostly for its EVs, Tesla reckons it knows enough about batteries to solve a key problem in the solar energy chain -- namely the storage of power for use when the sun, power grid, or both go offline. The battery design, consisting of many laptop-style lithium ion batteries stacked together, was chosen after two years of research and a $1.8 million energy grant. The two companies are now waiting for tax credits from the Fed and California before rolling out the tech. And being kissing cousins -- with Elon Musk as both Chairman of SolarCity and CEO of Tesla -- certainly can't hurt.

Chumby halts hardware sales, long-term support looking mighty unlikely

dead chumby

"The site is closed temporarily." Never a good sign, indeed, and particularly not when it's plastered across Chumby's own webstore. For over two days now, that's the message given to anyone attempting to buy hardware from the company, and it looks as if the Chumby we knew may be counting down its final days. A scrappy upstart attempting to bring its Chumby OS to the masses via injections into larger OEMs, the outfit saw little to no uptake across a wide variety of products; Sony nixed the Dash earlier this year, and Insignia turned its back quite some time ago. To be fair, Chumby had stopped manufacturing its own branded hardware in 2011, with the outfit's Duane Maxwell confirming the outright death of Chumby's store in a forum posting today. According to him, there was "no point in keeping the store around once inventory was exhausted," though hardcore loyalists can still snag a NeTV from adafruit.

Other forum members have noted that all support emails now seem to be headed into the Great Beyond, and while the actual network that Chumby OS relies on remains alive at the moment, there's no guarantee it'll last. Interestingly, at least two individuals instrumental in the building of Chumby are now working at Media Navi -- both Alison Fay and Michael Coleman have moved Chumby-related job listings to "Past" in their LinkedIn profiles. We'll be reporting more as we get it, but in the meanwhile, we'd recommend giving your favorite Chum a warm hug. His / her heart may not be beating for too much longer.

[Thanks, Jonathan]

Justin Bieber Impostor Arrested for Child Pornography, Extortion

Well, this is just about as disturbing as it gets.

A 34-year old man named Lee Moir has been arrested in New Jersey on charges of extortion, manufacturing child pornography and luring, according to a statement by acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray.

Moir allegedly impersonated Justin Bieber online in order to attract the attention of an unidentified 12-year old girl. She tried to cut off contact once she learned the truth, but Moir is then accused of threatening the victim's family and forcing her to perform Web cam sex acts.

Moir hails from Toronto and authorities say he has been in contact - via Facebook and other social media accounts - with "many juvenile females" in the United States, Canada, France, Australia and the Philippines.

He was brought to justice this month when he solicited an undercover police officer posing as a 14-year old girl and was arrested at the location where he agreed to meet her.

Cloud Insecurity: Not Enough Tools, Experience or Transparency

It may be that the hype around cloud computing has settled, but security concerns continue to make headlines and are often cited by CIOs as top priorities. CompTIA's latest trends study found that while many U.S. companies trust the cloud enough to use it, only 13 percent trust it enough for heavy lifting.

Boeing CST-100 capsule could shuttle astronauts to ISS, shows off its innards in Colorado Springs

Image

With the Space Shuttle now officially grounded, NASA has been researching alternatives for ferrying astronauts from Earth to the International Space Station, orbiting some 230 miles above the planet. One such vehicle has made its way from Boeing's HQ to the National Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, where a full-size model is on display for conference attendees. Externally, the spacecraft appears very similar to the reentry modules of yesteryear, measuring 14.5 feet with room for up to seven people. The craft is designed to make its way through the atmosphere mounted to an Atlas V rocket, and is rated for up to 10 roundtrip missions. As is typical with spacecraft, it looks like astronauts won't be traveling with first-class accommodations -- things will likely feel quite cozy when the CST-100 is at capacity -- but such conditions come with the territory. There's no date set for delivery, but the craft could be making its way to space as early as 2015, and has reportedly been tested in the Nevada desert as recently as this month.
